Mangalore: Cloudy Weather Sans Rains in Coast

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 22: Both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district were devoid of any rains for most part of the day on Tuesday September 21, although a few places experienced light showers occasionally. While Subrahmanya received some rains till evening, Chikmagalur got heavy rainfall on Tuesday evening. The entire coast was enveloped in cloudy weather the whole day.

As the catchments of Varahi irrigation project in Udupi district located at the foot of the Western Ghats have been receiving rains, the reservoir has been experiencing increased inflow since some days, and the water level is rising. The water level, which is 588.18 metres at present, is expected to reach the maximum level of 594.36 metres shortly, if the inflow continues at the present rate. If that happens, excess water will be released. As such, people living near Varahi and Halady rivulet basins located at lower levels, have been advised to move to safer places with their cattle and belongings, said the executive engineer of the dam division of Varahi project.
