Mangalore: Sahyadri College Holds Workshop on Parallel Programming

Mangalore, Sep 22: Department of computer science and engineering and information science and engineering organized a state level workshop on Parallel programming for the faculty members of various engineering colleges under Visvesvaraya Technological University at Sahyadri campus here, recently.

The main purpose of organizing the  workshop is to give a platform for the faculty members of various institutes’ to exchange and update their knowledge in the area of Parallel programming. With the invention of multi-core computer architectures to achieve higher computation speed-up, we require to write the programmes which can do parallel processing. This type of programmes can be used for high performance computing which is very much required in most of the present day available applications.

Dr. Niranjan N Chiplunkar, vice-principal, professor and head of the department of computer science and engineering, NMAMIT, Nitte inaugurated the programme.

Addressing the gathering, he said that to extract the full computing power of multi-core processor technology we require to use parallel programming.

Dr D L Prabhakara, principal and director of the institute presided. He briefed about the infrastructure available in the campus and the activities being organized in the campus among others.

Dr Nagesh H R, professor and head, department of of CSE/ISE and convenor of the workshop introduced the chief guest and welcomed the gathering. Mehanaz Begum., lecturer, department of CSE , proposed the vote of thanks. Sandhya Baliga, lecturer, department of CSE compered the programme

A total of 35 faculty members from various engineering colleges participated in the workshop.

After the inaugural function Prof Niranjan N Chiplunkar delivered his keynote address, which was followed by Saritha, lecturer, department of ISE of the institute handled a session on Pthreads. Prabhakara B K, assistant professor, department of CSE of the institute handled a session on OpenMP.

The workshop also had a very interactive laboratory sessions on parallel programming and other related experiments.

During the valedictory function Jaganath Chowta, trustee , Bhandary Foundation and Devadas Hegde, trustee, Bhandary Foundation were the chief guests.

Ancilla J Pinto, lecturer, department of ISE welcomed the gathering. Dr Nagesh H R, professor and head, department of CSE/ISE and convenor of the workshop proposed the vote of thanks. Prathibha Bhat, lecturer, department of ISE compered the programme.
