Puttur, Sep 25: On Friday September 24, the court here remanded the four persons accused of murdering Tingalady Umesh Rai, to three days of police custody.

The accused, D Ammanna Rai, Jayaram Shetty, Ramachandra Naik and Ramakrishna Naik, were produced in the court by the rural circle inspector of police, B K Manjaiah. The policemen prayed for seven days police custody of the accused.

After hearing the arguments put forth by the advocate for the accused, and the assistant public prosecutor, judge Venkatesh Nayak sent them to police custody, limiting the period of custody to three days.

Reportedly, the accused had gathered information that Umesh Rai had planned to assassinate Muttappa Rai during a programme organized by the latter to dedicate the newly made Brahmaratha (chariot) under his leadership, to Lord Mahalingeshwara temple here, sometime back. For this act, Umesh Rai supposedly was funded by criminal elements hiding in the Gulf.

The policemen plan to exhume the mortal remains of Rai from a plantation in Anile in Badagannur village on Saturday September 25.
