Karnataka to accord priority for resolving long-pending water disputes: CM

Bengaluru, Aug 26: Karnataka will accord priority for resolving long-pending inter-state water disputes, especially those pertaining to Krishna, Cauvery and Mahadayi, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Thursday.

The Chief Minister, who held a meeting with legal experts on Krishna, Cauvery and Mahadayi inter-state water disputes in Delhi, said the State Government was keen on resolving long-pending disputes in the Supreme Court and was making all efforts in that direction.

Speaking to reporters in Delhi, the Chief Minister said the State Government has held discussions with legal and technical experts on various inter-state water disputes. A decision on filing a petition in the apex court on the Upper Krishna Project as well as the irrigation projects taken up by the neighbouring Tamil Nadu government, he said.

Bommai termed Tamil Nadu’s river-linking project as illegal and said the State Government would make its stand clear when the matter is taken up by the Supreme Court.

The meeting also discussed the Mekedatu drinking water project and pointed out that Karnataka will seek quashing of a case filed in the Madurai court as it does not come under the jurisdiction.

State Water Resources Minister, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr K Sudhakar, Additional Chief Secretary Amita Prasad, Water Resources Department Additional Chief Secretary Rakesh Singh, Chief Minister’s Principal Secretary Manjunath Prasad as well as Advocate General Prabhulinga Navadgi and others attended the meeting.

The Chief Minister also called on Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi as well as Union Human Resources Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Later, Bommai also visited the National Police Museum in Delhi and paid his homage to the deceased policemen.
