Puttur: Gold ornaments stolen with promise of making them shine

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Aug 27: A gram panchayat member has filed complaint in the Sampya police station near here about having lost five and half sovereigns of gold ornaments, after believing in the promise made by a man that the ornaments will be left shining brightly.

Indira from Pernaje, a member of Nettanige Mudnoor gram panchayat, said she has been cheated. A person who promised to polish her gold ornaments and make them shiny like new, took away about five and half sovereigns of gold ornaments in her presence. His behaviour and the manner in which he executed the theft appeared so genuine and natural that the woman never got even an iota of doubt about his intentions.

The stranger who came in an auto rickshaw told Indira that he was selling a powder which can leave gold ornaments, showcases, television sets, silver and gold ornaments shining bright. He promised to show her practically how the silver ornaments can be polished within minutes. Indira, who trusted him, handed to him her silver anklet which the man made to shine by using a yellow powder he was carrying. Indira then handed him some gold ornaments. He poured yellow powder on the ornaments, and acted like polishing them by using liquid and gel. He then boiled the ornaments in water that was boiling on account of battery. He then removed the ornaments, washed them with water, put saffron powder, packed the ornaments in a paper and gave it to her. He asked Indira to open the ornaments after half an hour, before going away.

Indira grew suspicious and opened the packet in five minutes and found that the ornaments given by her had turned into small pieces and that the visitor had escaped after turning a part of the ornaments into liquid form.

It is said that the cheat had visited the house of Indira's neighbour before coming to her house with a similar offer, but was sent away by them.
