Crimes against women rising: At least one rape every day in Karnataka

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Aug 27: Even as the gang rape of a college student at the foot of Chamundi hill Mysuru gave rise to all-round indignation, a chilling information has come out as far as Karnataka is concerned. From January 2019 and May 2021, 1,168 rape cases have been reported from the limits of police stations in the state. On an average, a rape per day is happening and gang rapes have numbered 22.

During the said period, 18 women are raped and murdered. The crime graph against women has been showing an upward trend from this year onward.

After Nirbhaya was killed in Delhi in a barbarian manner, people had erupted in protest, and demanded stern laws to tame the rapists. People also expected passage of some new laws to punish the rapists. However, during the last two years, the number of inhuman sexual harassment and rape against the women have shown a rising tendency.

Women safety guidelines are in place but cases continue to happen all over Karnataka. The women continue to become victims of sexual crimes. In the year 2019, 10,227 cases were filed relating to torture, kidnap, dowry etc. In 2020 the numbers went up to 10,761. During this year, till May 2021, 4,401 cases have been reported.

After he coronavirus lockdown, the cases of thefts and robberies have gone down but sexual harassment of women is on the rise. During the period of the pandemic and lockdown, the state witnessed about 400 rape cases.

President of Karnataka State Women's Commission, Pramila Naidu, rejects the notion that this is a reflection on the poor law and order situation in the state. She says that the police are functioning well. She said she will write to the home minister urging him to increase police patrolling and increase the number of CCTV cameras all over the state.

We are overly developed and extremely progressive in certain areas but in some other areas we are still living in the past. For us sex is taboo, sex education is a big no no, boy-friend, girl-friend relationships are frowned upon. So youngsters are forced to do everything quietly and secretly. We have to change our mindset and change with the times same like the developed world. Have you ever seen such frequent and violent rapes in any of the developed countries?

Rapes happen everywhere in the world. Sexual harassment happens even in developed and so-called free countries. It is sad that such things happen too frequently in a country where people worship goddesses. Every child should be taught to respect from a young age. Sexual education, especially one promotun g re

Rational thinker MangaloreRapes are happening in all countries but not the way in our India ,chain wayto say,the uneducated ones make decision to rapes in a way to increase and make name .Rapes were happening in olden days but was not coming to public .but rare.In every other countries when one goes to register the case or on Phone ,police take it seriously and immediately registered and start to investigate.Sometimes cold cases will be later taken up but not by us.Police sometimes dont agree to register cases,or even make fun of women who wants to file case.Other countries no need to go to register to their alloted police station. You can register any where they want.sometimes our police send them back to register tomorrow or their own place. It is a very degrading for women.Police are there to register ,not citizens to degrade. Our ministers are not at all interested only if some famous one.Even there are cases where Police self are the accused when goes to register. Why is the law then ?

yogi, stalin, piranha, and may other cm-s talk big things about their respective states.... but ultimately all low life crowd crawls towards maharashtra and karnataka... street vendors, unskilled labour, road side vendors... pavements / slums of KN / MH getting filled with migrants from other states... no one migrates to UP, Bihar, Gujarath, KL or TN... every one comes and lingers on in MH and KN... including large student population which 'purchase' education... there should be some check and balance on mindless migration from one state to another... each state should create jobs so that lumpen section does not migrate to another state and commit anti-social or criminal offences... in BLR most crime committed by migrants, so is the case in MLR... mysuru rape was committed by students from outside the state...

Totally agree with you. They should be hanged within a year once proven guilty . Court must not entertain these cases for long time . Decision must be given within a year and hang the culprits to death.

Highly deplorable. Money and the pleasure money can buy is the only value that seem to be the value that is pursued. This level of degradation of moral values needs to be arrested. Simultaneously, the law should be enforced in its true spirit so that it will serve as a deterrent.
