Mangaluru, Aug 28: Even though Dakshina Kannada has been identified as one of the leading educational hubs in the state, surprisingly, 220 Anganwadis here do not have their own buildings. Out of 2,104 Anganwadi centres in the district, 1,884 have their own premises. The other 220 are functioning either in rented buildings or spaces provided by voluntary organizations or donors.

Mangaluru city has been identified as a centre of education where students come from various places within the state and abroad for education. The educational centres here have won appreciation besides recognition. But it is also surprisingly true that most of the Anganwadi centres in the city do not have their own buildings whereas most of these centres located in rural areas have their own buildings. In Sullia taluk, for example, all the 165 Anganwadi centres are located in their own buildings.

Among the Anganwadis without their own buildings, 20 have their own sites. Some other rural Anganwadi centres also have their own sites.

In the city, 126 Anganwadi centres do not have their own buildings. In Udupi district, only 26 Anganwadi centres do not have their own buildings while 76 function in government school buildings. Many Anganwadis face problems because of lack of land due to deemed forest stipulation, said deputy director of women and child welfare department, Sheshappa.
