Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani submits resignation

Gandhinagar, Sep 11 (IANS): In a major political development, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Saturday tendered his resignation to Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat at his residence, Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar. The BJP leader confirmed that he has resigned from the top post.

"I am resigning from the post of the Chief Minister. I thank PM Modi and the party for giving me an opportunity to work for five years," Vijay Rupani told the reporters at Raj Bhavan.

"I am just a worker of the organisation and will continue to be so. For the upcoming state Assembly elections, definitely our PM Modi will be the face," Rupani said, when asked who will be the face for the elections, as he and the party earlier had declared that the 2022 elections will be led by him.

"I will accept whatever responsibility the party gives me," said Rupani.

Vijay Rupani took the state's Chief Ministerial position on August 7, 2016, and is representing Rajkot West in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. It is learnt from sources that the party will declare Rupani's replacement by Sunday. Most likely his replacement could be deputy chief minister Nitin Patel.

His resignation is surely a surprise especially since polls in Gujarat are nearby next year. Whether his move to resign will benefit his party in future or not will surely be clear only when the polls happen next year but at present whoever succeeds him should try his best to handle Corona crisis and Vaccination more effectively and also address the problem of large unemployment and decrease in business volumes at present in Gujarat atleast till the public vote next year and elect a govt as per their choice.

Rupani was Amit's man. ( Mis) Handling of Covid, dissatisfaction about corruption in state govt. and elections next year cost him the CM's post, next CM could be a powerful Patel leader from Saurashtra e.g Rupala.

Gujarat has had a massive blow in the recent days - but for reasons unknown, Indian media has not published it. Ford had set up its assembly plant in Gujarat in 2015 under great fanfare and Make in India hype. Many poor farmers had lost their land. But after sustaining a $ 2 billion loss, Ford has decided to close their operations in India. 3000 employees directly employed will lose their jobs. Indirectly, many more thousands will lose jobs as car parts business will also need to close shop. Obviously the Gujarat CM was not able to stop Ford from leaving. With Ford leaving, attracting other international car companies to India has become so much harder.

BJP is a party of difference, there is no shortage of leaders in the party, reshuffling to be done regularly, Gujarat will see a new CM, and he will not be a product of dynasty and nepotism ..... On the other end Congress party is unable to find a suitable candidate for the post of its president for so many years now, Rahul appoints his mother Sonia sometime, then again Sonia appoints her son the other time, musical chair within the family ....
