Washington, Sep 30: US President Donald Trump has announced that his administration will officially refer to artificial intelligence (AI) as “Super Intelligence” (SI), saying the new terminology better reflects the technology's capabilities.

Trump made the announcement during a White House event on Tuesday after a high-level meeting with leading technology executives. He said he was signing a document to change the terminology because the technology was no longer appropriately described as “artificial”.

The meeting brought together several prominent technology leaders, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Reuters reported that Trump also announced a voluntary AI safety agreement involving major technology companies at the meeting.

Under the administration's policy, the terms “Super Intelligence” and “SI” will be used instead of “artificial intelligence” and “AI” in federal government references to the technology, to the maximum extent permitted by law.

The stated policy is intended to ensure that federal terminology reflects what the administration describes as the transformative capabilities and opportunities associated with the technology.

However, the change does not mean that existing laws, contracts or historical records using the terms “artificial intelligence” or “AI” will automatically be altered. The terminology change is subject to existing legal requirements.

The White House has also recently used the term “Super Intelligence” in its official communications. In a September 22 statement, Trump said the technology would henceforth be officially called “Super Intelligence.”

The development comes amid an expanding debate in the US over AI regulation, safety and the rapid development of increasingly capable AI systems. Trump has repeatedly stressed the need for continued technological development, while technology companies and policymakers have been discussing safeguards and oversight.
