Bengaluru: ‘Power generation in state unaffected by coal shortage’ - Sunil Kumar

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Oct 15: "Coal shortage has not so far hit power generation in the state. Currently, Coal India Ltd and SCCL have been supplying 12 to 13 rakes of coal every day to Karnataka and we have been able to meet the demand for power," said energy minister, V Sunil Kumar.

"Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd has been operating three coal-based power plants at Raichur, Ballari and Yeramarus. Raichur thermal power plant has eight units with a capacity to generate 1,720 mw power. Ballari plant has three units where 1,700 mw power can be generated. The two units at Yeramarus have a capacity of 1,600mw power," the minister stated in a press statement.

Kumar said that 13 units spread over these three plants can generate 5,020 mw power. Out of those 13, eight have been functioning now and the others have been shut down because of lack of demand. "Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd is getting 12 to 13 rakes of coal on a daily basis and care is taken to see that the state does not face power shortage," he added.

Good to know regarding COAL. However globally all countries are trying to comply with Climate change by 2035, and this is the hot subject today. Europe, United States and may Asian countries are changing from Coal to Gas. Can we develop a strategy to convert from Coal Fired power plants to Gas based, hope this is possible in phases. India has performed Sales Purchase Agreements (SPA's) with various companies internationally to import Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and is also strategically installing many LNG terminals to regasify LNG on either side of the coast.

Padubidri project .. went thru various owners ..etc Last reports as per prominent newspaper ... Shut down because various ESCOM’’s owe approximately Rs 2500 crs .....No money to purchase coal hence shut ...Udupi power .. When consumers delay even by a day paying of electricity bills there is disconnections .. How this Rs 2500/ crs fraud has happened .. May be some went for some schemes .. irrigation etc ..but majority of farmers complain no power or low voltage etc etc .. So it is clear major amounts swallowed .. This is one project example .. like this all over the country ... For thermal .. coal based ..basically 3 players .. Coal producer like coal India .. Power producer .. Distribution like ESCOMS .. ESCOMS have failed on payments..thereby power producers huge debt ..unable to buy further coal . In turn coal fields / mines .....operating at low output .. India has one of the largest coal reserves yet due to Various mismanagement .. Coal India payments crisis etc .....this mess

Padubidri project.. no demand for power now. Summer they may restart when dams get empty. Now power generated from hydro electricity and wind. So no requirement positive for nature. No emissions
