Mangaluru: Kinnigoli church parish priest Fr Mathew Patrick Vas passes away

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 22: Fr Mathew Patrick Vas, parish priest of Immaculate Conception Church, Kinnigoli, passed away in the wee hours of Friday October 22. He was 62.

It is gathered that he suffered a massive cardiac arrest.

Fr Mathew Vas, was the well acclaimed producer of ‘Bhuvana Jyothi’, first ever musical film in Kannada and in India on the life of Jesus Christ.

Fr Mathew Vas hails from Siddakatte, Bantwal. He was born to Mr John Vas and Lucy Rodrigues on July 8, 1960. He was ordained to priesthood on April 30, 1987. After serving as the assistant parish priest in Kinnigoli and Kulshekar Church, he trained himself in mass communication at Patna.

Fr Mathew was interested in mass media and social communication. Hence, he studied a short course on film production in Taiwan. As the director of Canara Communication Centre (CCC) he ventured into film production. ‘Bhuvana Jyothi’ (Jesus, the light of the world) directed by Udupi Vasudeva Bhat of ‘Nadavaibhavam’ production, was his first film to become the first ever musical film in Kannada on the life of Jesus Christ. It was a 35 mm film depicting the life of Christ through Karnatic music, songs and dance which appealed the costal people of South Canara and got dubbed into other languages as well.

Fr Mathew Vas, as the 4th Director of Canara Communication Centre (1991-1998) of Mangalore Diocese, has selflessly served the centre and the diocese, immensely contributing to the work of proclamation, evangelisation, communication and dialogue through media.

Fr Mathew Vas served as the parish priest in Bela (1998), Udupi (2004), Angelore (2011) and Kinnigoli (Since 2018). He was fondly remembered by all for his affection, friendliness, simplicity and jovial. Currently he was also the Spiritual director of Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradesh (R).

The mortal remains of Fr Mathew Vas will be brought to Kinnigoli Church for public viewing between 8.30 and 9.30 am on Saturday, October 23. The funeral Mass and burial rites of the late priest will be at 10.00 am in Immaculate Conception Church, Kinnigoli.

Very sad news of sudden demise of Fr.Mathew Vas.When We was at Bela in 1998 he came to Mumbai with my cousin sister Sr. Lucrecia from Sisters of Charity for funds collection for constructing a Church at Bela. He stayed with me for a day & helped him to some extent to raise some funds. Later I remember meeting him Angelore Church where he was the Parish Priest He has indeed given his best to serve our Lord in different Church & other capacities. I had the opportunity to meet Fr Mathew Vas for the very first time (Sep 12) this year. We discussed a lot about his birthplace Siddakatte, his siblings, Canara Communication Center, and the movie released when he was the director at CCR that ran houseful for 3 months or so. we also talked about his interest in agriculture and the work (Arecanut plantation) that he did while he was Parish Priest at Bela and the yield that comes now. We also talked about his interest in dairy farming and cows/ coconut plantation at his current Kinnigoli Parish. We also talked about the accident that his jeep had toppled from the bridge due to a blackout he had in his eyes for a few seconds while he was driving. This gave me a thought that this was a serious health issue and I asked him to do his health checkup regularly. The blackouts cannot be investigated as the person is healthy and normal at other times. We agreed to keep in touch but did not know it was too short and quick that I could hardly think of he will be gone soon. Rest in Peace Fr. Mathew Vas .

He was helpful, humble, kind, soft spoken, humorous, gave some helpful suggestions etc. Never in a hurry to end the meeting. I am thankful to God that I had an opportunity to meet Father. I had planned to meet him during my next visit to Mangalore but alas….. During this heartbreaking time, by this message, I would like to leave a short Note to comfort his family, friends, well-wishers, and others “I hope God blesses and comforts you and your loved ones”. This is shocking.. We have no words.. Last when my mom spoke to you Fr Mathew, you said you miss your mom. Now the only peace we have is you have joined your dearest Mai in Heaven. You are a wonderful person Father, and I have no words to describe you as today I am speechless to know you have left the world. I am glad that we were in touch throughout even after you were transferred from Angelore Church. You were one of those priest's whom we missed a lot until date after you got transferred. You were family to us that we could talk anything to you, we will miss everything about you, everything... This is heartbreaking. You are gone too soon Father. Meet you on the other side someday. There are so many amazing things to be told about you, but right now i am speechless.... Your sermons, the way you handled people of all kinds was tremendous. I have seen the way you have helped people in need. Without seeing anything you would just give out money. This, I have seen in my eyes, you had a big heart Father. Mai (Mother) is someone you missed so much. Now that you are with her, send us all strength & courage to accept this great loss... We will miss you Father, we will miss you.

Dear Queenie , as I was reading your comment my eyes filled with tears I couldn't read till the end. Because what said is very true. We were together in Udupi, He was the Parish Priest of the Mother of Sorrow, Udupi and the Dean of Udupi Deanery. We had wonderful time, at that time Udupi was part of Mangaluru Diocese. Now it's very hard to me to accept this sad departure of our beloved Fr.Mathew. I am just one year junior to him by age. May God grant eternal rest to his soul. Hope to join him soon in that Heavenly Kingdom. Dear all please watch the episode Hallo Father, where we see his wish regarding his death is fulfilled ( death on Friday and funeral on Saturday).

I don't want to be too sad as fr Matthew will be hurt... He sure is happy there with his Mai... His heart was with his mom... Thank you Father for your kind words.

Fr Mathew was a true pastoral worker. Energetic in every work he was down to earth and practical. He had unique way of handling crisis. His loss is indeed a loss to diocese of Mangalore . In his passing away we have lost a true freind and true priest of Christ. May his Soul Rest in peace.
