Karnataka to develop 'Super 30' engineering colleges

Bengaluru, Oct 23 (IANS): With an aim to develop 'Super 30' engineering colleges by taking up one college in each district of Karnataka, a committee will be formed to work towards providing quality teaching in every district, and to meet industry requirements.

The committee -- headed by Prof. Karisiddappa, Vice-Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), will comprise of academicians, industry leaders, officials among others.

This was decided in the preliminary meeting chaired by C.N.Ashwath Narayan, the Minister for Higher Education, on Friday.

The purpose is to focus on providing quality teaching in every district and to meet industry requirements. Wherever the government college exists that will be considered on priority and in districts with no government college, private engineering colleges will be selected, Narayan stated.

Colleges known for quality will not be included in this. But those which lack quality teaching will only be taken up to be developed as model colleges. The development would mainly concentrate on faculty training, industry collaborations, setting up of laboratories, foreign collaborations, and such other things rather than physical infrastructure, the Minister emphasized.

To begin with, one department in each selected college will be taken up for up-gradation and later on, it will be expanded to the whole college. The funds needed for this will be shared in the ratio of 1/3rd by CSR funding of companies, 1/3rd by VTU, and 1/3rd by the institution itself, Narayana explained.

It was decided in the meeting to connect the selected colleges with the leading industries and to allow industries to guide the colleges as anchoring institutes. It was also suggested to loop in alumni students in this attempt.

This another ploy by BJP to make money. To get license and other things needed people will have to pay lot of money which will go to BJP coffers to buy MLA’S after the next election. First think about providing jobs for engineers who are qualified and doing other jobs or unemployed.

This is all tamasha. The Government announced that UVCE would be converted to an autonomous engineering college in its centenary year, 2017. They even appointed a committee headed by IIIT Bangalore Director, Prof Sadagopan. The committee submitted its report and nothing has happened. There's atleast one government engineering in all the districts and the enrollment is pathetic. The Government should focus on improving those colleges first without any fanfare.

I personally never say no to this move. But currently Karnataka has 250 Engineering colleges Out of which only a few < 10% provide quality Engineering education and we can find a Engineer at every feet. The job opportunities for Engineers have declined steeply and Engineer's even opt to work in other professions (receptionist) after passing out. Having a educational institution today in place in more like a business than providing quality education. Once the institution is established after some teething problems beyond five years it operates on auto pilot to earn revenue. Can the regulatory body (VTU) think of restructuring the technical education syllabus by narrowing the gap between Academics and Industry. I have experienced this with budding Engineers who pass out in high First Class with Distinction or even a University Rank. Can any one think in this direction to restructure the Technical education syllabus at international standards.

Sure, we need to put serious efforts to improve the quality of engineers passing out of engineering colleges from Karnataka, especially private colleges. Recently 80 management trainees were recruited from various disciplines at all India level for a large government affiliated organization, while they represented majority of the states, not even a single engineer was from Karnataka engineering college. Going little deeper it was found that none from Karnataka could get past the screening level cut off set on the basis of GATE score. One for sure is quality of lecturers engaged in these private colleges. If they are paid just Rs 10000 per month, what would be the outcome? Unless we attract good talent in imparting knowledge we will continue to suffer like this, only quantity and no quality.
