Mumbai, Nov 8: As many as 16 passengers sustained injuries when the Mangalore-Mumbai Matsagandhya Express in which they were travelling met with an accident owing to heavy rains near Ankola in North Karnataka. The accident occured at around 7.30 pm on Monday November 8.

The train was on its way to Todur station when some boulders slipped off the hillock and fell on to the train.

Karwar's Superintendent of Police Raman Gupta told IANS that the incident occurred on the Konkan railway track just ahead of a railway tunnel.

The injured have been admitted to various hospitals in Karwar.

"Four people received serious injuries and they have been admitted to a government hospital. There is report of one person succumbing to injuries, but I am not in a position to confirm it rightaway," Gupta said.

Konkan Railway officials said that a team of officials and medics had been rushed to the accident spot.

Landslides are not uncommon on the Konkan Railway tracks during the monsoon, when rocky gravel and boulders slip onto the tracks causing accidents.

This is the fate of construction in India, particularly government projects. They are not worried about the safety of people and property loss. They are only worried about how much money can be made overnight. If steel net is fixed in dangerous positions .

Dear All- Yes it is unfortunate accident that has happend but without knowing the facts & figures blaming the Konkan Railway is not in a right spirit. I travel in this rout every month & every time i notice some innovative ideas to avoide the land slides like putting the wire mesh, building a side wall, growing the new grass etc. Yes we have go a long way to make it perfect but constructing a rail way line in this area is a marvell coinsiding with some dangeres. Still I rate Konkan Railway is far far better then any other railways in India.

This is not the first accident. There are hardly any retaining walls built inspite of the fact that hillocks are cut to lay the lines. The first one can be called accident but the following are murders.

It is sad to hear of the accident and sorry to know about the injured people. Nothing sure that we reach safe when we start the journey by these trains. Only the guardian angel can protect us and reach us home safe. The railway authority has to be very cautious during these rainy days to do your duty diligently. You are the guardian of all travellers. Don't sleep. Wake up! Protect the millions. God bless you

It is very sad. We are able to construct bridge over the sea,run the train at the sky but we could not find a solution for hill collapse during the rainy season even after 20 years of commissioning of Konkan Railway.Prestigious Konkan Railway is to be uplifted drawing multiple lanes and cutting the hills wherever the threat of collapses.

This is the fate of construction in India, particularly government projects. They are not worried about the safety of people and property loss. They are only worried about how much money can be made overnight. If steel net is fixed in dangerous positions this kind of accidents can be avoided. Year after year we are waiting for heavy rains and mud slide, but we are not planning to stop such mud slides.
