Region bordering Mumbai to be called 'Kittur Karnataka' henceforth

Bengaluru, Nov 9 (IANS): The Karnataka government at the cabinet meeting held on Monday decided to rename the 'Mumbai-Karnataka' region as 'Kittur Karnataka' region, state Law Minister J.C. Madhuswamy confirmed.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had made an announcement in this regard during campaigning for the recent bypolls.

The region comprising Uttara Kannada, Belagavi, Dharwad, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Gadag and Haveri districts was referred to as Mumbai-Karnataka region as they were under Maratha rule once and were included into the state of Karnataka at the time of formation of states on the basis of language. The people of the area have been demanding renaming of the region to mirror the local culture and language.

Kittur was the capital city of the erstwhile queen Chennamma, who had waged a war against the British and sacrificed her life for the country. The people have welcomed the decision of the government.

The government also decided to hold a winter Assembly session at the Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi between December 13 and 24.

Name which is there since years "Maharashtra-Karnataka border" is best. Name of both the states are highlighted. Why you people want to change such a beautiful name and put the barriers in the minds of people of both the states? Dont waste so much tax payer's money by doing so. Let us keep Rani Abbakka's name to our govt. monuments/vidhana saudha/Mantralaya/corporation offices and so on. Simply dont create controversy and instigate fire....Taxes are paid by people belonging to every party/caste/creed/communities.......Some may like the name and some may not. Those who dont like the name, might throw abuses on the name that may get changed! Why give opportunity for such a inspirational figure's name to get abuses hurled at? It will be insult for us ..let the name be universal and not controversial

There nothing called bordering Mumbai, rather it should be Maharasthra. Or bodering Belagavi Or Kittur. BJP leaders have only one business after 2014,cow urine(gomutra) or cow dung(bull shit - segani) and repackaging of previous governments' schemes/policies and changing of names of places! Bhakthas are kushhh with these 2 achievements! Country's growth and development area has totally taken a back seat for at least 15 plus years!

How does this affect people of Karavali? We have our own unique identity as Tuluvas, Konkanis or Bearies. We ideally should have had our own Karavali Nadu or Tulu Nadu.

Jai Kittur Rani Chenamma. Jai Jai Karnataka Mathe. Renaming is fine. High time we did it taking a step away from the slavery and invader mind set and namimg our regions after our real heroes. Not enough. Their near descendants too who may be in oblivion must he honored. Their roles in histoy rewritten. Our country did not get Independence because of 1 or 2 fighters as it is made out to be. Scores of individuals, their families have laid down their lives for us to be Independent. The wrong done thus far should be rectified. Half of India has been named after one family. Not done ! Give them their due but not at the cost of others who fought for our Independence without any expectations and selflessness. Jai Hind ! Jai Karnataka !

Name of Mumbai City will always remain. Only the region bordering Maharashtra which was called Mumbai Karnataka (according to our politicians) is now changed to Kittur Karnataka. This is an unknown name to common people who had always been calling the region as Maharashtra Border.
