Renowned cardiologist Dr BM Hegde conferred with Padma Vibhushan

Bengaluru, Nov 9: Renowned cardiologist, professional educator and author Dr Belle Monappa (BM) Hegde was conferred with the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award by President of India Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday November 9.

Dr Hegde was awarded the Padma Bhushan earlier in 2010 and was the recipient of the prestigious Dr B C Roy award in 1999. He has authored several books on medical practice and ethics.

Hegde was conferred the Padma Vibushan for his work in the area medicine.

The Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished personalities, the Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order. The Padma Shri is awarded for distinguished service in any field.

    “The art of medicine consists in amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.” “A witty saying proves nothing!”. Both are attributed to Voltaire---- DR BM HEGDE --while being from Mangalore / Dakshina kannada dist - deserves all congratulations - -- one of the earliest from the Dist --to go to the UK for receiving top medical degrees -etc etc --- However many a times he advocates simplistic medIcal solutions thru' quotes as above -- which may be @ times not the right advice as per today's evidence based medicine--- also many a tests (sometimes needless if Doctor has vested interests) -- does have a positive role in early detection- A super star recently died and now Doctors advice screening tests etc -- So one needs to have a balance- After all life expectancy at time of independence was below 40 yrs - and now approaching 70 yrs --thru' modern medicine - care --proper analysis by Doctors - not by quacks as earlier ---- vaccines etc etc --

    Congrats to Dr. B.M. Hegde. He is apparently imparting ethics to medical profession, by questioning the age old and time tested medical theories and suggesting people to discard them because a few un-scrupulous doctors exploit the gullible patients. Although this can be agreed to some extent, to paint the entire medical profession with black colour is not fair. I had corresponded with him by e-mail in the past, but did not get a satisfactory answer. I have been suffering from diabetes and hypertension, for many years, although I am strict in diet and regular in my physical exercises. On listening to one of his videos, and to test his suggestions, I stopped taking my medicines and the result was disastrous. My sugar level shot up, so also my BP. I therefore, resumed taking medicines as before. Needless to say, the benefits of the medicines far outweigh whatever drawbacks he mentions. His statement that a “Pill thrills but kills” is not always true. He asked people to stop taking statins the cholesterol tabs to prevent heart attack, because allegedly, it is very harmful. I told him that I had been taking it for 15 years and I am very well. He replied that “If I am still alive, I should be grateful to God!” It is another 10 years now and by God’s grace, I am hale and hearty! There are many other questionable advices from him which should be taken with a pinch of salt. Please, therefore, consult your family doctors, before blindly following his advice, lest you may face serious upheavals in your health.

    Those who are well versed with Dr B M Hegde's health tips, which go viral often, by now may have come to know that he is a ' Terror to the Pharma Mafia'. ! He has absolutely no qualms on exposing the side effects on the over dependance of drugs and why they should be abandoned at the outset ! His tips on simple living, high thinking give us an insight as to how to go about on our well being and remaining healthy. Everything having their roots in traditional practices, but giving them a scientific touch and explaining why ! The world in itself may have never seen a Doctor with a FRCS degree speaking and elucidating matters relating to health the way he has ! Congratulations Dr... May God give you more strength to cure !
