Mangaluru: Two wheeler riders expose themselves, others to peril

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 10: After the lockdown was lifted, a large number of two-wheelers have flooded the city roads. Many of the two-wheeler riders apparently have no patience to abide by road rules and therefore they flagrantly violate traffic rules with impunity.

The reckless and high speed driving of the riders pose danger to themselves and the general public, particularly the senior citizen pedestrians. The people have urged the police to undertake verification of vehicle documents and besides stopping the two-wheelers that are found to be moving about recklessly, the concerned have to be fined, they say.

The two-wheelers are found to be moving at high speed both in the main roads and interior roads. They are also seen breezing through shortcut paths at will. People have complained about the two-wheelers whizzing past the main roads and parts of national highways passing through the city and also driving against the traffic on the reverse side. Use of mobile phones when riding the two-wheelers, moving in the opposite direction on one-way roads, moving dangerously through short cut roads, and violation of traffic rules have been often seen.

Some have fitted their mobile phones to the front portion of the two-wheeler which the riders keep watching while some others hold the phones in one hand while continuing to operate it, and control the vehicles with the other hand. There are also people working for food delivery services who have to deliver the items ordered within a specified time limit. The people say that these boys use interior roads as far as possible as any delay can rob them of the hard work they put in to deliver the food parcels, the people point out.

There have been complaints about the jolly rides of two-wheelers. With the opening of colleges, there will automatically be an increase in the movement of motorbikes and scooters. There are occasions in which the two wheeler riders ride on the footpaths when the traffic is heavy. If the police leave such instances unchecked the problem is sure to aggravate in the coming days.

M A Nataraj, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) here says that steps are already being taken against those who violate traffic rules when riding two-wheelers. He recalled that there had been some complaints about the food delivery boys during the lockdown. As the complaints have emerged again now, special vigil will be kept on their movements, he clarified.

Well if we clearly see. Most intersections are not manned by these cops. They are just bystanders or looking the other side or on their phones. They sre very active when there is vip movement. My question to Mr Nataraj is what steps have been taken in this regard? Ivranna yaar kelthare. Targetting only two wheelers and having pet peeves against one category of road users is not good. Jolly rides or not its thier money thier machine. Maintaining law and order should be your concern. If someone is found breaking the law. Fine them. But dont be biased. We need a more active and up to date law system regarding roads and transport.

4 wheeler drivers who are complaining about 2 wheeler.. 1st see that whether you are properly following the rules. If you are following it so does the 2 wheeler riders also follows it. This negligence applies not only for two wheelers.. this applies for all category of vehicles.. we cannot blame only on 2 wheeler. It depends upon a person who drives it irrespective of any category of vehicle.

Driving on the wrong side of the highway has become a menace and there is nothing that the Highway Patrol do against such offenders. In a bid to save a litre of fuel, two wheelers who drive on the wrong side of the highway, actually put others lives at more serious risk, apart from their own.

Ours is a country, where father loads a bag of fire crackers on a scooter and makes his son sit on it and rides at will. Both died horrible deaths. Why would such people care about others on the road ? When there is no fear of law or awareness of safety, people do whatever they want.

I live near Bunts Hostel and often have to move through the Bunts Hostel crossing. Most of the time there is no police control at this major intersection. It is everyone to himself or herself. You can often find the traffic constables sheltering in a corner, with their eyes on their phone screen. 100s of motorists break the rules every minute. Nobody is bothered. If the police commissioner is bothered he should come in plain clothes on a plain unmarked vehicle and check the reality for himself.

Reckless driving has become the norm of the day in Mangalore. Especially the teenagers who think that the road is a racetrack. The traffic police just don't care. They only stop vehicles to check for papers only. Over speeding, wrong side driving/overtaking and no consideration for even elderly pedestrians is just got into their brains. What kind of urgency is there for those reckless drivers? Is a couple of minutes more to reach their destination so important that they not only risk their own lives as well as put others in danger? Really, human lives do not have any value at all for them. Only if the traffic police come to their senses and start penalizing them will they learn safe driving.

2 wheelers specially scooties have become real nuisance in all the cities, even small children's are riding them without any check by parents. Moreover people driving bigger vehicles need to be super cautious as these 2 wheelers can anytime wcriss cross in front of vehicles and finally end up in a accident. Taking into consideration our roads n population its better to have a separate road or allocate specific time for these vehicles in city limits

Anna, Please tell us when did we had potholes free roads in this district/state and country at large. All that tax paid has been eaten up by political rats, their clans and chor babus from top to bottom. People here do not use the basic common sense when comes to driving a four wheeler of any type and two wheelers are worst. They ride on busy roads left, right and centre with all kinds acrobatics actions as if there is no tomorrow for them to ride. Mobile Phone use during riding and driving is common as if they are talking to Prime Minister or President of the country. Bottom line is we Indians no matter how much educated or intellectuals we are, we hardly value human life. Once behind the wheels or on the riding seat then we think that we are only one on the road. Secondly the way driving license is issued without basic safe driving and riding lessons or knowledge of proper traffic rules is root cause of 99 percent of road accidents. Since we are a over populated Nation, Administration and law enforcement authorities are not bothered when few hundred die on roads every day. Therefore until we learn to value human life nothing is going to change. Only way is to keep praying all the time while driving so that you reach safely the destination.

Our city is small and not extended. So all vehicles roaming in such a small area. Next already many accidents happened and many lives gone because of bad roads and hopeless traffic system. Suppose our DC office, Service bus stand, RTO office, if they shieft, then only traffic can be controlled. Otherwise if more accidents happened means automatically two wheelers will reduce. I can say this is not a smart city but a worst city.

Tired of this Menace of 2 wheelers/ 4 Wheelers accident drama/ deaths , Issue Driving Licence only to those who deserve, Policing has to be strict on these drivers/riders, stop and check documents, of the vehicle, Driving Licence, , Driving is not a Right , its a Privilege, those who drive with out proper documents, cause accidents, resulting in deaths , should be made to pay huge fine, which will go to the betterment of Police department, , secondly made to Clean Streets as a Community Service,,

My dad used to close the side view mirrors justifying that passerby in the crowded city roads or the two wheelers will damage it if its kept open either by touching it or by crashing into it. He used to laugh whenever talk to him about Lane Discipline. He believed it will take another 25 years for that awareness to come to our city. MULU GAP THIKNDA, VOTH POOPINE, EVEN IF ITS WRONG SIDE. Waving your hand out is the solution for all.

First please use full force to stop wrong side driving . People use the wrong side of the road as their birth right and even argue as if we have made a mistake following the rules. Police and administration should start creating awareness and start fining these people. Delivery guys are first on the list in violating the rules. Follow the rules and all traffic jams will start getting free automatically.
