Bangalore: Liquor Sales During Apr to Oct up by Rs 600 Cr over Last Year

From Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore, Nov 11: Liquor sales in state went up by a whopping 18 per cent during the seven-month period from April to October this year and enhanced the excise revenue from Rs 3,800 core during the same period last year to an impressive Rs 4,400 crore, registering an increase of Rs 600 crore.

All outlets across the state generated reasonably good business and the excise department has asked its district level officers to identify locations to open more outlets as well as depots, according to Karnataka’s excise minister M P Renukacharya.

The excise minister, who held a review meeting with officials of MSIL, Karnataka state Beverages Corporation Limited and the Department and office-bearers of retail shop owners’ associations, also heard grievances of officials and shop owners.

In terms of revenue growth, the state has registered a 16 per cent increase.

As against 216 lac cases of liquor sold in April-October last year, sales have touched 255 lac cases during the same period this year, an increase of 18 per cent, he said.

The sale of beer went up from 104 lac cases in April-October this year against 77 lac cases during the same period last year, an increase of 27 lac cases.

Noting that cooperation between liquor shop owners and officials would lessen public complaints against the Department and help to eliminate sale of spurious liquor, the minister said stern action would be taken against all those shop owners who open shops early and close them late in the evening.

According to the department regulations, all the shops are to be open between 10 am and 10.30 pm.

Some owners open their shops as early as 6 am, he said pointing out that they followed their own timings.

Licenses of such shops would be cancelled if they refused to obey the department guidelines, he warned.

To eliminate sale of spurious or illicit liquor, the minister asked taluk, district and state level officials to hold regular raids and inspections.

The taluk level officials have been told to hold gram sabha meetings to check manufacturing of liquor illegally. Shop owners and officials have been told to share information each other for earning more revenue to the state, he added.

Mr. Santhu and Mr. Yousuf, thank you for your kind words of encouragement about my comment.

    Medical science is telling that
beer and wine in strict moderation
is a healthy practice, but how many
    will follow that rule?

    Behind my Dad's medical practice
in Kerala, there was liquor shop
    "Indian-made foreign liquor". In
those days, majority of the people
did it very cautiously from public
eyes. A good majority of the customers were budding lawyers, and
they never came up in their profession, and majority of them
died earlier or got chronic sickness.

Even though Gujarat is not getting
revenue from liquor tax, they are
getting 10 times of the ill-gotten
    revenue, through high productivity
of the alert work force. I commend
Mr. Modi for his solid stand on the issue of " prohibition".

Mahatma Gandhi wanted India to be
    a liquor-free nation, but now
    liquor production and its tax
revenue are the main source of
revenue for some States of India,
    by systematically destroying
families and health of the masses.

If we can help one person from the
    evil influence of liquor addiction,
we are helping many other members
of his family, and that is divine
    service.

Mr. A S Mathew - You said it all - Liquor in moderation is good. Indians drink to get pissed drunk - very few enjoy a drink - often one hears " Oh I finished half a bottle of Whisky & then drove all the way from Ladies Club to Bijai " - No wonder the Excise revenue has shot up - God save our youth.

The revenue would be up by another 300cr if Liquor sale is promoted in college campuses. After all, what we can boast about is the rise in revenue. Who cares about the damage done by alcohol and smocking?

Progress of any institution or organisation immensely depends up on the youth. In this period How many youths adicted to alcoholism God knows. It is Sad to see that the revenue minister ( shame to call him a minister for his recent involvment in the political drama )asking the officials to identify new locations rather than thinking about the destroyed familys.
What a contribution to the young genaration.
    Tremendous progress towards disaster.
Much needed aid at right time for BJP and for Renu.

This is great news and huge achievement by the BJP government in Karnataka. This trend shows that during election time and political instability the liquor sale [of course purchased by our evil leaders] is gone high. Why they can not publish which all area and when the sale occurred, so that the public will learn the reality of the political game. We are INDIANS and having great ideas but our political that too many are stupid devils. We all must destroy them and bring up good leaders.

Hope certain part of the profit will given the people who lost their job due to closing arrack shops and toddy business. WE need the leaders who really act in deed not in words.
