Mangaluru: Accidents increasingly snuff out lives of innocent pedestrians

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 18: Urban areas have been witnessing an increasing number of vehicles with each passing day. These accidents have claimed the lives of vehicle drivers, riders, pillion riders, co-passengers and passengers in addition to a high number of innocent pedestrians. The death of pedestrians is a cause for concern. It appears that most of the vehicle drivers view pedestrians either walking by the side or crossing the road with derision and treat them as impediments.

A well-known entrepreneur from the city had succumbed to injuries caused when he was hit by a two-wheeler. A person had died after a car knocked him down opposite Kadri police station a few days earlier. Every month, various accidents are registered, and out of them, over ten relate to pedestrians.

In 1,460 accidents which happened between 2017 and 2021, 180 died and 1,123 were injured. In 2,019, 857 accidents happened in which 124 were killed and 736 injured. In 2020 and 2021, because of the coronavirus pandemic, vehicular movement was less and accidents were considerably reduced. However, of late, there has been an alarming increase in the number of accidents.

In the year 2019, 124 had died in various accidents out of which 50 pedestrians lost their lives. Out of 144 deaths which occurred in 2018, 57 were pedestrians. Thirty-eight more pedestrians were killed in 2020 and 19 in 2021. Many deaths of pedestrians are happening in accidents occurring between Kulur and Surathkal when they cross the highway.

In the city, many roads do not have footpaths and the pedestrians are forced to walk by the side of the roads. In many cases, deaths of pedestrians are caused when vehicles come from the rear side and hit them. Lack of footpaths, reckless driving, use of mobile phones when driving, a sense of neglect towards pedestrians, failure of the administration to ensure pedestrian safely, driving under the influence of intoxicants, negligence of pedestrians, error in judgement when crossing the road, parking of vehicles on footpaths etc have been causing accident involving the pedestrians.

The solution is quite simple. Needs political will. Traffic violations like using phones while driving, traffic-signal violations, that endanger pedestrians should be treated with higher priority than violations that endanger the motorist (like helmet/document violations). The fines should be relevant; it should be decided based on the violator's annual income or net assets. Otherwise, fines end up as a tool to legalise violations. Repeat offences should attract better penalties like imprisonment, or a higher tax rate, that will deter violations.

An earnest plea to the MCC. Plants on dividers are causing blind spots for both motorists and pedestrians. Please at least trim these plants periodically.

Very true. For esthetics, flowering shrubs that do not grow beyond 1 foot height may be planted. For example, the low-level plants on the divider in front of SCS Hospital, Balmatta, are ideal and beautiful, but not sure of the cypress planted in between... Looks good, but Cypress or tall plants should not be planted at least for the initial 10-20 metres of the start/end of the divider.

It is not the rash drivers who cause the accidents it is the infrastructure which is the main culprit. The footpaths are not complete at a strech the ending is incomplete mostly ending into a pit, so how do you expect pedestrians walk on the footpath? The local corporator only looking to make some quick money. What about the cars and bikes parked in front of jewelry outlets and bars respectively? The footpath At Shivbagh area on the main road opposite the MESCOM office the footpath is always occupied by restaurant users or wine shop patrons. Zebra crossings all disappeared in Hampankatta area in the name of Smart City.

I don't understand whom to blame. Our traffic department must request the administration to install fence on the divider, and it should be little more height that nobody try to jump also. Every zebra crossing both side humps is compulsory. CC camara must record each and every vehicles speed.

To those reading, Why are we quite at this happening and not gheroing the district administration in doing the necessary. We need the the traffic rules and regulations to be implemented strictly. No citizen should be above the law and thus is bound by the same. The worst part is that the inhuman nature that we see when two and three wheeler use the pedestrian path as a common way. On the road all vehicles are equal and they have to wait their turn behind each other. District administration should see that the vehicles riding on the wrong side, on footpaths etc. should be fined and jailed for attempted murder. No use just writing in this column .. wake up... write to the district administration- DC, Traffic, SP, Elected representatives, Judges... They are ever approachable and let them know our plight.

Rash Private buses, autos and motorcycles are the main causes for accidents - there is total disregard for the law and police also turn a blind eyes to all these violations.
