Wanted to Set up Airline, Minister asked for Crores as Bribe: Ratan Tata

Dehra Dun, Nov 15 (NDTV):  Rata Tata has disclosed that a minister asked his company for a bribe of 15 crores when he was trying to set up a domestic airline in the mid-1990s.

Tata did not name the minister and said the incident took place "10-12 years ago."  He also said that he hopes the matter is not taken up for investigation now because "it could cast shadows on the wrong person."

In the mid-90s, the Tatas tried to set up a domestic airline in collaboration with Singapore Airlines.

Explaining what happened, Tata said, "We approached three Prime Ministers also. But an individual thwarted our efforts to form the airlines."

Tata said he was on a flight and "another industrialist who was sitting next to me said 'I don't understand... you people are very stupid... you know the minister wants 15 crores... why don't you pay it?'  And I just said 'You can't understand it... I just want to go to bed at night... knowing that I haven't got the airline by paying for it.' And I can tell you I would have been feeling tremendously shameful had we got the airline and we had paid for it."

He also stressed that he has not changed his mind about retiring in 2012 as Chairman of the Tata Group.

"I don't want to change my deadline I set for my retirement. There are lots of sacrifices, one has to make in terms of personal life. I wanted my life back. I want to enjoy the things that I wanted to do," Tata said.

In August this year, the Board of Tata Sons Ltd formed a selection committee comprising five members, including an external member for eventually deciding on Tata's replacement.

"There is no such thing as an indispensable individual. The day I succeeded JRD Tata, I felt I had to fill very large shoes. I knew that I cannot be another JRD and I have to be my own person", Tata said in reply to a question after delivering a lecture here.

"I believe my successor will be his own person and hopefully will do things for the country and the group the way we have been doing till now or much better.

"I ferociously want to ensure that my successor has total commitment for ethics and values."

I respect Mr.Tata very much.I think without BRIBE one can't run even petty shop in India. Then it is highly impossible that Mr TATA runs his Industries without paying bribe. May be Rs.15 crore is a big amount to pay as bribe.Anyway,Airline must be in Tata's hand.He is the right man.Indians owe him.

Give Air India to Tata and see how they convert it into one of the world's most admired airlines. It was a jewel in the crown of India before Morarji and his socialist buffoons decided to privatize it and to take revenge for Tata's support for Indira Gandhi. Remember, AI was the brain-child of JRD. He pioneered aviation in India and AI was his dream come true. Just give it back to them and see it re-emerge as an eminent airline again. We would like to know, who's that corrupt politician?

It was a known fact that the main culprit was Deve Gowda and his aviation minister. As a PM, he was a laughing stock to the whole world. At any important functions, he was Mr. Big-Dozer and such person was running our country of then 110 Crore people. He made CM Ibrahim as his man Friday, his front man. The Gowda family has been the bane of our state and has derailed every project that has not benefited their family financially. His family owns a vast stretch of land in Ramnagar hence they wanted to make Ramnagar a satellite city with Govt financed infrastructures. Even he tried to shift the airport project to Ramnagar. He is a dangerous politician, a wolf in sheepskin.

It is not the party which is corrupt but individuals. Even Nagesh Nayak, who knows Indians can not effectively rule ourselves, would be a corrupt to the core if he had the chance.Different blood doesn't flow in humans belonging to BJP. Look at some of the Mangalore corporators who made millions just after one tenure at corporation. Their posh houses, shopping complexes, acres of land etc are the testimony to this. Just before winning the elections they had nothing. India would remain corrupt as long as we keep blaming British/western countries or the party which is in power and not doing anything ourselves.

This is not the first time, TATA's were blocked by political powers. Way back in 1983-84, Indira Gandhi had blocked TATA's from launching Honda Civic car in India since it would effect Indira Gandhis son Sanjay Gandhis "Maruti Suzuki" Its suprising to see people here ,just comment because they cant stand BJP and blindly support Congress. It was Mr. Ananthkumar . Lets us ask the BJP & Congress for a JPC probe into this matter. The crook should be behind bars!

An advise to all politicians : Indians are boiling seeing their elected representatives involved in controversies regarding fraud. This country is going to "dogs" because of these crooks. A revolution in this country may be round the corner.People cannot tolerate any more.

In mangalore one can see the state of the roads. The Corporators blame the Commissioner for not settling the contractors bills. Hence no contractor wants to take up road work. The Commissioner says that the work was shoddy hence the deplorable condition of the road.Besides paying the Corporation officials a percentage the contractor has to pay 10% to the local corporator. This is the agony. In the bargain the people of Mangalore suffer. Each Mangalore Corporator is worth more than 3-4 crores today while the people struggle to make ends meet.

I would like to highlight the quality management that TATA’s demonstrate in today’s business. I have been to the Passport Seva Kendra in Bangalore to renew my in-laws passports. From the entrance till you file your papers every one is having a wonderful experience, because the whole computerisation process is handled by the wonderful staff of TATA consultancy. Thanks to S.M. Krishna for bringing in such professionals. Then you experience the role of same old government officials. The lady at the counter called the token number of my father-in-law made him to sit in front of her counter and left for lunch, to whom we taxpayers pay the salary.

One of the TATA staff noticed this and checked the token number of this senior citizen and asked the control room to restore his number so that other counter could call him. I just want you all to know the difference between TATA staff and government staff. Indians are not lucky enough to see a quality airline run by the TATAs. Sir please name that government, which was in power at that time. Let people digest the bitterness.

Noted Human Rights Activist Sir Jessi Jackson once wrote a nice article in 1992-93. A SCHOOL OF A DEAD SOUL. He asked 3 questions to the students. [1] How many of you brings Drugs and Guns in school? No one raised hand. [2] How many of you knows someone brings Drugs and Guns in School? Every student raised hands. [3] How many of you ever tried to notify School or Authority about this. No one raised hand. Same like the school students India today has became the Country of DEAD SOUL. Citizens and Taxpayers are addicted to the Snake Bites of Corrupted Politicians and its Officials. who are stuck as TERMITES and eating away the base of Mother India. Politicians had became SUPER GODS, and gives layers of lies to prove it true. Laws on Corruption are as outdated as our Politicians. No new laws are passed to punish them and enjoys the Blood Sucking. All tainted Officials and Ministers must be sacked with a life time BAN, stopping their entry through Revolving Door. India becoming Super Power in 21st Century cannot take Super Scammers with it. Aamdaar Niwas and the Flats given to the Politicians by Taxpayers are full of Political Pimps, who brings them merky deals every day and must be monitored. Please wake up your soul and judge the Traitors and don't get addicted to the history of slavery. JAI HIND.

i know politicians are corrupt.. but in this regard, the industrialist friend said pay a 15 Cr bribe... on what basis would it mean the minister himself asked for the bribe? also must mention that a lot of middlemen take advantage and claim that they have to pay the minister but at the end he uses his political connection to get the work and the money goes only to his pocket. I have experienced this myself. So i dont think all ministers are corrupt but rather the people they are surrounded by are unscruplous and devious.

Why our industrial houses like Reliance & Co not learn a lesson or two from such selfless and incorruptible industrial house like Tata? Sri Ratan Tata, we are proud of you. Long live Tata. Sir, instead of keeping your silence, you should have exposed that minister. We know that few of those worthless central and state ministers are highly corrupt and if given a chance, they will not hesitate to sell their country for a song.
India continues to be one of the most corrupt nations in the world with many of its public institutions given to rampant misdeeds. Corruption is India's bane and threatens to derail its rapidly growing economy.
According to Transparency International's 2009 Corruption Perceptions Index, India ranks a dismal 84th in a list of 180 countries. The corruption watchdog says that many African, East European and Latin American nations fare much better than India.

The TATAS are great people with
    high integrity in their business
dealings, and in taking care of their employees.

    If as many Government enterprises
    and departments can be privatized,
    this menace can be considerably
    reduced.

    If the government can confiscate
    the ill-gotten wealth of all
    the crooked politicians in India
being kept in somebody's name or
somewhere in the world, that amount
will be in the billions of dollars.

    Years back, one contractor from
    Malaysia committed suicide because
the PWD Minister and the Chief
    engineer of Kerala won't sign
    the bills without paying them
lakhs of Rs. under the table.

    Indian anti-corruption laws are
simply in the book, but not in
    practical life. Without giving
money under the table, based on the
gravity of the deals, nothing can
be done. If we won't yield to
the dirty pressure, we can come home
and cry about it. In most cases, If we complain to the superiors, then the amount
may be turned to be bigger to solve the same problem, adding more amount as the
extra consultation charges of the big person.
Solve the problem from the bottom
line if at all possible, so that
the public can save more money.

    Thank God for people like
Mr. Ratan Tata, for not yielding
to the dirty trick of the Minister.

Many things can be done through
phone or internet in the U.S., but
the same things can be done in India, either through
    wearing down the sandals, or
staying at home and throwing away
    money.

Nobody can blame Congress in this regard. Because between 1996 and 1998, there was BJP govt. in the centre. Again in 1998, BJP formed NDA and came to power in centre till 2003. Mr. Ratan Tata referred the term as mid 1990s and around 10-12 years back. Can somebody enlighten us who was the Aviation Minister at that time ?
