Bantwal, Dec 6: Former MLA of Puttur, Urimajalu K Rama Bhat passed away at his residence at Kombettu on December 6. He was 92 and was suffering from old age related illnesses.
Bhat was the sincere worker of RSS during his high school education. He had laid the foundation to make Puttur the strong fort of Hindutva. He had close rapport with senior leaders including Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani. He was the advocate, trustee of Puttur Mahalingeshwara temple, president of municipal council, president of Campco, strong pillar of Puttur Vivekananda Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Puttur MLA and was also known as the ‘Bheeshma’ of BJP. He nurtured several leaders. He protested against the emergency imposed by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and was imprisoned. He had taught Kannada to L K Advani while in jail. He stayed away from politics after 1985 but was the main think tank of BJP. His opinions were important in the party activities.
He used to finalise the selection of candidates for Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. His master mind worked for D V Sadananda Gowda to be Puttur MLA and V Dhananjay Kumar to be Mangaluru MP. His projects were important for Sangh Parivar to obtain power in the cooperative sector. He used to indulge in compromises during differences between party leaders and activists. He had an immense power of memory even when he was in his nineties, it is said.
