Karnataka to have Genome Sequencing Lab: Bommai

Bengaluru, Dec 7: The State Government has already initiated action to establish a Genome Sequencing Lab in Karnataka, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters at his residence in Hubballi, he said the State Health Secretary has been instructed to look into the needs of procuring necessary equipment and consult experts for the purpose.

"All the districts have Covid testing labs. Genome Sequencing needs expert systems and modern equipment. The spread of new variant, omicron, has necessitated sending test samples in suspect cases for omicron to Genome Sequence testing in NCBS. Arrangements would be made to get the test reports quickly," Bommai said.

Replying to a question about former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's allegations that number of mandays under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme has been reduced, Bommai said Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister KS Eshwarappa has already replied to the charge.

Sharply reacting to Siddaramaiah's criticism that "Bommai is a liar,’’ the Chief Minister said: "I had immense respect for Siddaramaiah. I am disappointed at his recent statements."

The Chief Minister, who has been campaigning for BJP candidates in the Legislative Council elections, said the ruling party’s Belagavi candidate Mahantesh Kavatagimath will definitely emerge victorious.

Bommai claimed that BJP leader Ramesh Jarakiholi’s younger brother Lakhan Jarakiholi, who is contesting in Belagavi as an independent, is a Congress party rebel and his candidature will not affect BJP. The ruling party is fighting unitedly on behalf of Kavatagimath and there is no doubt about his victory, he said.

Genome sequencer is available in Nimhans, IISc, NCBS etc., in Bangalore. Procuring sequencer should not be a big issue unless we pay premium because South Africa introduced this technique to sequence Omicron and that led to a demand and supply gap. Such costly procurement in the interest of public health is valid. Justifying that procurement if Omicron turns out to be tame, will join in the hall of fame like those costly sprinklers BBMP procured at premium and never used. However, how are we going to keep up with molecular biology expertise (even basic) needed to operate these sequencers properly and interpret their results? I would call it kind of blessings in disguise if everyone starts carrying their genome data with them, very often on phone. Apps providing you your risk profile, suggestions for lifestyle consistent with your genome to reduce imminent risks will be actually the true benefits of such procurement. Cost of getting a genome risk map will go down due to economies of scale - it is costly today. Some thinking into the whole affair is needed however. (a) RT-PCR was never meant for detection of virus for clinical purposes; we made it a standard. (b) Genome sequencing and analytics thereof is equally statistical in nature. Not sure many understand the results and its reliability effectively to consider it as make or break kind of a characterization technique based on which medication plan can be made.

True. Politicians and bureaucrats these days base their decision on opportunity cost. They are trying to spend to avoid criticism on them that, when they should have procured, they did not. True, they did not understand Corona virus and cold virus looks very similar under the high res microscope. They do not know why RT-PCR is a sure shot detection technique (China told WHO and our IMCR blindly follows WHO. Even doctors or those in the know could not question, because they did not have alternative). Sequencer procurement is to make up for opportunity cost.
