India extends ban on international commercial flights till Jan 31

New Delhi, Dec 9 (IANS): India's civil aviation regulator, the DGCA, on Thursday extended the ban on scheduled international commercial flights till January 31.

Earlier, India had announced plans to allow resumption of scheduled commercial international passenger services from December 15 with certain conditions.

However, on December 1, the Directorate General of Central Aviation (DGCA) said it is "closely monitoring" the situation emerging out of the Covid-19's Omicron variant and the final decision on the resumption of near normal international flight operations will be taken after consultation with stakeholders.

In the notification on Thursday, the DGCA extended the ban on scheduled international commercial flights till January 31, 2022.

"This restriction shall not apply to international all-cargo operations and flights specifically approved by the DGCA."

It also said that scheduled international flights might be allowed on selected routes on a case to case basis.

India had banned the operation of international flights on March 23 last year to contain and control the spread of Covid-19. Flight restrictions, however, were later eased under air bubble arrangement with certain countries.

Indian Government is playing with Travel and Tourism Industry. Please give us compensation for having closed down our Business establishments for almost two years now. Many countries abroad have paid up to 70% salaries and maintenance of the offices. But for us, we still face this travel ban & thus making our survival more difficult. It is indeed ridiculous that you ban flights just like that when the entire world other wise is allowing travel with covid protocol to be followed. Revenue Indian Govt earns through tourism Industry has just gone down to almost nil, still you do not understand that we the stakeholders in the industry need to survive. Pay us at least 50% of our revenue from April 2020 until March 2022 of what we earned in the previous two years on prorate basis and save us from the sinking ship. This would enable us to live on. when you can wave of thousands of crores of loan of select corporate people why not look at us kindly and save us from rough weather that we are going through.

Two more months and the civil aviation ministry can celebrate 2nd anniversary of international flight bans. But why ban for so long is anybody's guess. Have they ever thought about the stress and inconvenience the common people are going through. So many have lost jobs because of travel bans, so many have not met their families since 2 years. Initially it was told that once people are vaccinated, travel will be back in full swing. Now it seems even after being vaccinated we are going nowhere. Very sad state of affairs.
