Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Dec 10: Many people become under-trial prisoners after committing crimes due to momentary anger or other frivolous causes. They normally do not have a criminal mindset. Till their cases are heard by the court and they are proved guilty after the cases are heard, they are treated like common people.

People entering the prisons as under-trials have to stay in the prisons till their cases need to stay inside prisons till their cases are heard and inquiry of their cases are completed. As a result, there are chances of them suffering from psychological pressure. These people are also overcome by the thoughts about carrying on life after their release from the prisons.

Before reaching the prisons they perhaps were doing some jobs, and taking care of parents, wife and children. They could be the sole breadwinners of their families. If he is jailed, his family would be finding it hard to carry on with life. This will bother them. The departments of prisons services reforms department has provided the golden opportunity for the people to earn when in jail and feed the family. This scheme will be launched in the jail here shortly.

District skill development department will provide training to these prisoners in cooking, motor rewinding, candle making, etc. The candidates are provided training for three months and encouraged to begin producing things. The prisoners will be able to extend financial help to their families when being inside the jails.

This training proposes to give self confidence to the prisoners after their release from the prisons, enabling them to lead a self reliant life. As they concentrate on work, bad thoughts will stay out of their minds. Training in tailoring, stitching, soap and phenol manufacturing etc were given. As all the prisoners were not showing the same level of interest, keeping in mind the need to look after families upon their release, now, they are trained in employment and handicrafts. The department issues certificates to the prisoners thereby helping them to join the mainstream after their terms.

Prisons are actually spots for transformation of minds. Most of the crimes happen because of temporary rage. The prisoners here are now being trained in different skills based on training given here. Yoga training supported by the Art of Living Foundation is also imparted. These training sessions help the prisoners to remain quiet, and get rid of the criminal mindset and regain their mental agility and health, said district prison superintendent here, Srinivas.

The only countries that seem to an institution called "undertrials" are India, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. It is against their fundamental human rights to put them behind bars for extremely small misdemeanours which they are not likely to repeat even if not put behind bars. While even Saudis show mercy, Indians and Pakistan enjoy breaking other people's spirit and look to punishment.
