Puttur: Demolition of 156-year-old school building - DC seeks report

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Dec 15: With reference to the demolition of a 156-year-old heritage structure in which a school was being previously run and which was the venue which was used by the late Dr Kota Shivaram Karanth to impart dance training to the children, the deputy commissioner (DC) of Dakshina Kannada district, Dr K V Rajendra, has asked the deputy director of public instruction and zilla panchayat chief executive officer to investigate the circumstances under which this happened and file report thereof.

The ancient building which was razed overnight was located at Nellikatte in the heart of the city. The building was constructed by the British and Dr Karanth was imparting dance training here 83 years ago. The school development and monitoring committee (SDMC), in the light of the fragility of the structure which posed danger to the people, and failure of the people's representatives to get restoration work done to save the structure, had taken a decision and demolished the building on December 11 night. Many including the fans of Dr Karanth have expressed anguish at this development.

Block education officer (BEO), Lokesh has been asked to send a report on the incident by the DDPI. The block education officer has served notice to the SDMC and the headmaster, seeking a report on circumstances leading to the said demolition.

Many are of the opinion that the SDMC does not have the power to demolish heritage buildings and it should have provided information to the DDPI through the BEO. The DDPI should have deputed experts with instructions to file reports and then convince the state director of public instruction about the need to undertake necessary works.

Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner, Dr K V Rajendra, said that a decision on steps to be initiated will be taken after getting report on why the demolition happened. Puttur assistant commissioner Dr Yatish Ullal said that his office as well as the offices of the education department here had no prior information about the demolition drive. He noted that this was a property of the government and felt that legal steps are possible for violation of rules.

a country that is truly proud of its heritage will not allow such structures to be razed down. All talk of heritage is limited to politicians using it to woo votes. If there was genuine pride, we will not be rebuilding Central Vista, Kashi Viswanath temple precincts, Sabarmati Ashram redevelopment nor allow this school buidling to be brought down. what use a report now?

In the FIRST WORLD, there are policies and laws in place to protect heritage buildings, and walls, and rocks, and every other thing. In the FIFTH WORLD, people do as they please, media raises the matter, and then some official seeks a report.

DC wants to ensure that he follows certain norms and executes his responsibilities. 156 year old building and the maintenance cost to retain such dilapidated structure could high and regular touch off is a must preserve that mud bricked building. Government can raise a better building for a school with a provision to raise further in the future to have higher classes.

The end goal to structure a new building which will not last for 20 years and in turn make some money out of it. A criminal case should be filed against the erring officials.

Look at the building. Nobody took care of it all these years. and now that it was demolished, because it was risk, everyone has woken up. Fact of the matter is, we have many such buildings which are old. Due to lack of funds,it will not be possible to keep it in prime condition. expecting the Govt to take care of restortation will not work for the simple fact that, there are not enough funds. Public/corporates will have to step in , if they wish such structres to be preserved.

Heritage, destroying that was the primary air, strength of the structure secondary. Whom they want to fool? Only fools get fooled, rest understand.

Overall a shame -- not able to maintain - or not having funds-- and now too late -- DC report --what report -- for what purpose-- ( if aurangzeb had built -- with the new mindset understandable --) -- A school - temple of learning has least importance-- for the ruling dispensation - (only imaginary - historical injuries-- processions -- gaudy etc- etc --) --
