300 new coronavirus cases in Karnataka, 279 recoveries in single day

Bengaluru, Dec 19: Despite fears of the new Omicron variant of coronavirus spreading quickly, Karnataka on Sunday December 19 continued to maintain a steady rate in the number of new cases, with the state reporting 300 new infections.

As per the bulletin released by the state health department, the active cases in the state stand at 7,140. Among the districts, Bengaluru Urban registered the highest number of single-day cases with 168 new infections, while Dakshina Kannada saw a spike of 37, and Mysuru reported 13 new cases.

The increase in Dakshina Kannada's tally is mainly due to two clusters found in two educational institutions, one each in Bantwal and Mangaluru, where out of a total of 33 cases, five were found to be of Omicron variant.

Only one death due to coronavirus was reported in the state on Sunday, from Udupi. With this, the toll so far stands at 38,288.

The state recorded 279 discharges from hospitals, taking the total discharges so far to 29,56,970.

So far, Karnataka has seen 30,02,427 positive cases since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

The positivity rate for the day stands at 0.26%, while the case fatality rate for the day is 0.33%.

As many as 8,27,24,289 vaccination doses have been administered so far.
