Mangaluru, Jan 2: After a few nail-biting final rounds and some top quality singing, Vaibhav Kamat, Goa was crowned 'Rai Kogull' (King Nightingale) and Sonal Monteiro, Shaktinagar 'Rani Kogull' (Queen Nightingale) in MCC Bank Ltd SOAD-5 MANGOA', the Konkani television singing contest powered by MCC Bank Ltd and telecasted exclusively on Daijiworld 24x7 channel.
The result of the two-year long Konkani TV singing contest, organized by Mandd Sobhann, was announced at 'Kalaangann' in Shaktinagar here on Sunday January 2.
The top four chosen from the final ten were Vaibhav Kamat (Goa) and Jason Lobo (Mangaluru) are the finalists in the male category and Sonal Monteiro (Mangaluru) and Treeza Lopes (Honnavar).
Vaibhav was crowned 'Rai Kogull' with 266 points while Sonal and Treeza secured 269.5 each. Based on the result of super six as a tie breaker, Sonal was crowned as 'Rani Kogull'.
Apart from bagging the title, Vaibhav and Sonal received a cash prize of Rs 50,000 each and a chance to perform in an event at London to be organized by SKA London. Treeza received the popular contestant award, a cash prize of Rs 10,000.
The awards and prizes were given away by Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, bishop of Mangaluru, Ashok Patki, eminent music composer, Anil Lobo, chairman of MCC Bank Ltd, Walter Nandalike, managing director of Daijiworld media, Louis Pinto, president of Mandd Sobhann and Eric Ozario, gurkar, Mandd Sobhann.
Legendary Konkani singer Lorna Cordeiro was conferred with the lifetime achievement award for her contribution to Konkani music and culture.
Wishing the contestants and organizers, the bishop said, "In our childhood, we all used the word 'Konkani' as an alternative for 'Christian'. But later on, we understood that so many communities use Konkani as their mother tongue and they come under a single community called Konkani speaking community. Language and life always goes together and by the way of speaking, we can judge a personality, behaviour and culture of a person. That is why our elders always used to say to use good and polite terms in whichever language we speak. The usage of language is very important and sometimes it should be on some parameters. I congratulate the organizers for conducting such an entertaining reality show. I also congratulate all the winners for their success."
Speaking after being crowned as 'Rai Kogull', an elated Vaibhav said, "I thank God for the crown. I am grateful to my family and wife. I thank the organizers of SOAD-5. I am really grateful to the viewers and fans for the support. I request everyone to support new talents in the coming years."
'Rani Kogull' Sonal, expressing her joy with tears, said, "It is a great moment for me. I cannot express the happiness in words. I thank my father for being my guide and critic and helping me improve my singing. I thank my family members for the support and all the viewers and fans for choosing me as 'Rani Kogull'. I also thank Mandd Sobhann."
Roshan Crasta, Bela, Roshan Angelore, Sachin Sequeira, Sanjay Rodrigues and Prajwal Fronterio backed the contestants with music. Team members of Nach Sobhann performed mind-blowing dances while members of 'Sumel' sang a song dedicated to Lorna.
Kejtan Dais, Nithin Kootungal and Sonia Shirsat were the judges for finals.
Arun Raj, Mona Mendonca and Prithuma Monteiro comered the programme.
