Mangalore, Dec 8: Noted limerick writer Prof Bhuvaneshwari Hegde asserted that sense of humour in literature of any language is a prerequisite to entertain the readers, and in the present times comedy is necessary to alleviate modern day tensions.
She spoke after inaugurating ‘Beary Musical Evening,’ organised at Town Hall on Wednesday December 8 by Beary Sahitya Academy. She said that though a poet's imaginations may have no basis in reality, poetry is nevertheless helpful in creating a positive attitude towards life.
Speaking further she said that Gandhiji had a good sense of humour and was always ready with a smile, which is the root cause for his achievement. Calling Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts places with cultural diversity, she called upon the Muslim community girls to open up their minds and take part in the changing social phenomenon.
A multi-lingual poets' meet, a comedy show and musical extravaganza were also staged on the occasion.
Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy president M B Abdul Rahman presided over the programme. Mangalore MLA U T Khader and Noor Mohammed among others were the chief guests.

Ali Kunhi Pare and Ahmed Iqbal Kannur read poems in Beary language, Mahesh R Naik and Devika Nagesh in Kannada, N P Shetty Mulki and Raghu Idkidu in Tulu, and Venkatesh Nayak and Alwyn Daanthi, Chamera Dinesh and Karavattira Shashi Subrahani in Kodava language.
A comedy programme by Academy member Rahim Ucchil and musical extravaganza by Beary singer Basheer Ahmed Kinya and team had the audience thoroughly entertained.
Chandrahas Rai B, registrar of the Academy welcomed the gathering.
