Second Equation: 5806 Candidates for 595 ZP, 11,416 for 1931 TP Seats

Bangalore, Dec 22: With the stage set for the first phase of the zilla and taluk panchayat polls of Karnataka on December 26, the equation for the second phase of the polls scheduled to be held on December 31 is now available.
As many as 5,806 candidates are in the fray for the 595 zilla panchayat seats while another 11,416 candidates are contesting for the 1,931 taluk panchayat seats up for grabs in the 17 districts going to polls in the second phase.
However, the final picture of the total candidates contesting the zilla and taluk panchayat polls in the second phase will be known on Thursday, the last date for withdrawl of nominations
It may be recalled that 1,549 candidates are in the fray for 375 zilla panchayat seats and another 6,144 candidates are contesting the 1,728 taluk panchayat seats in 15 districts going to polls in the first phase. Candidates in six TP constituencies have already been declared elected unopposed in the first phase.
Counting of votes for both the phases will be done on January 4 and the final results are expected by noon on that day.
According to information obtained from the State Election Commission, the total number of district-wise candidates contesting the zilla panchayat seats is as follows with the number of seats in each district given in brackets:
Chikmagalur – 441 (34 seats), Dakshina Kannada - 215 (35), Udupi – 161 (25), Hassan – 346 (40), Kodagu – 154 (29), Mandya – 429 (40), Mysore – 472 (46), Chamarajangar – 177 (21), Belgaum – 723 (86), Bijapur – 391 (38), Bagalkote – 327 (32), Dharwad – 240 (22), Haveri – 173 (32), Uttara Kannada – 515 (36), Davanagere – 303 (34), and Koppal – 358 (27).
The party-wise candidates contesting in the second phase of the zilla panchayat polls is: Congress – 1356, BJP – 1515, JD(S) – 1045, BSP - 101 , CPI – 16, CPI(M) - 15, NCP - 19 and Independents – 1739.
The district-wise total number of candidates contesting for the taluk panchayat seats is:
Chikmaglur – 862 (110 seats), Dakshina Kannada – 575 (129), Udupi – 431 (95), Hassan – 875 (150), Kodagu – 194 (49), Mandya – 854 (152), Mysore – 1022 (171), Chamarajangar – 440 (85), Belgaum – 1981 (336), Bijapur – 842 (144), Bagalkote – 651 (118), Dharwad – 534 (75), Gadad – 412 (71), Haveri – 830 (118), and Uttara Kannada – 913 (128).
The party-wise candidates contesting in the second phase of the taluk panchayat polls is: Congress – 3144, BJP – 3499, JD(S) – 2127, BSP - 131, CPI – 8, CPI(M) - 51, NCP - 63 and Independents – 2893.
