Kundapur, Feb 15: “There could be repeated frictions if there is a disruption in the flow of water on a level land like that on the very source of the Varahi irrigation project. Varahi river water flows to Karkala and Kaup but not to Siddapur. The officials should make sure that the water flows to our farmer’s cultivations without bowing down to political or contractors' pressure,” said Udupi Raita Sangha president K Pratapchandra Shetty.
He was speaking at a meeting of the farmers of Varahi area held by the Udupi Raita Sangha Siddapur in Siddapur Gram Panchayat auditorium.
“It is ironic that Siddapur does not receive water even though the Varahi river project is in Siddapur. The right bank project has not reached a stage. The works that were not in the base project have picked up speed now. The funds for Siddapur irrigation project are not approved yet. Though the proposal is in front of the government, the local elected representatives lack the necessary will to obtain the government’s approval. Farmers need to bring about pressure on the administration through the local representatives,” he said.
“Though 10 rivers flow in Udupi, everybody’s eyes only the Varahi river. We do not understand the reason for others sticking to Varahi even though there are several sources of water closeby. We do not object to providing drinking water. But we will not allow injustice to farmers like in the base Varahi project,” he said.
“Setting aside a portion for Rattadi is not right. As the water flows through Kulanje, it should be supplied to Rattadi nearby. Similarly, Varahi water should be made available to Siddapur, Hosangadi, Ulloor, Machattu and Shankaranarayana gramas. Farmers will lose their patience otherwise,” he said.
Sampigedi Sanjiva Shetty said that officials were providing the survey number of the catchment area during the previous farmers' meetings. “The survey number should be provided immediately. Siddapur irrigation project is deserted now. The work of Saukur irrigation has begun but is proceeding in the direction not mentioned in the initial plan. Though the farmers are facing injustice, they are unable to speak. Though a way was planned at Siddapur market to supply water to the Siddapur Varahi offices, it is amended now. It is not right. There was an opportunity here to supply water to Siddapur,” he said.
The farmers severely condemned the negligence of officers towards the meeting. They warned of protests if the survey numbers of catchment areas are not provided within the time limit.
Gram panchayat president Shekar Kulal, Raitha Sangha chief secretary Sathish Kini and heads of the association were present. Raita Sangha spokesperson Vikas Hegde welcomed and compered the programme. Siddapur zone president proposed a vote of thanks. Siddapur zone Raita Sangha representatives were present.
