Tumakuru: English lecturer quits job over alleged bar on her hijab

Tumakuru, Feb 18 (IANS): An English lecturer working as a guest faculty has resigned from her post as she was asked to shun the hijab while teaching in Tumakuru district of Karnataka on Friday.

"It is a matter of my self-respect. I can't teach without the hijab," the lecturer Chandini said after quitting.

"Since three years I am working in Jain PU College as a guest lecturer. In these three years I did not have any problem and I worked normally with ease. But, yesterday my Principal called me and told me that classes must be conducted without a hijab or any religious symbols. Since the last three years, I am lecturing wearing a hijab, it hurt my self-respect and I didn't want to work in that college anymore. Hence, I resigned voluntarily," she stated.

In her resignation letter Chandini has said that she is resigning as she was asked to remove her hijab which she has been wearing for three years in the college. "Right to religion is a constitutional right which nobody can deny." She stated that, "I condemn your undemocratic act."

The college authorities refused to comment on the issue.

Meanwhile, many netizens who came across her resignation letter have raised questions over the lecturer's language skills.

The hijab row in Karnataka has turned into a major controversy. Across the state, students have started to agitate and protest against the decision of college managements to deny permission to attend classes while wearing a hijab. A special bench constituted by the High Court is hearing the matter and the government has stated that after the verdict, it will come out with a specific rule regarding wearing of hijab.

Now she has resigned , after some days she will think when her pocket will feel the pinch. Remember no one even the God does not come to feed you. No religion will feed you . Here I am not pointing out for only one religion , It applies to all . Humans are created by God and made to earn for living .

Time to recruit experienced & qualified English Teacher, who is aware of letter writing and doesn't wear Hijab without hiding face in the classroom. When there are grammatical errors in the resignation letter itself, how can we expect her to teach " INGALEESH"??? It should not be like GULUGULU for GOOGLE

Actually uniform was introduced for equality and simplicity. In the view of constitution, I think, it must be a 'restriction in dress code'. In India people belonging to different religion/caste/community are living together with harmony. In public, there is no significance for uniform. As per my openion, it is better to discontinue uniform dress code for the students and teachers after they reach age 18. That is, till PUC uniform is ok for students. Uniform is not necessary for graduate level onwards.

How was this niquab and hijab clad guest lecturer selected? Without those outfits so that she could be easily identified? What was her photo like in the teaching degree/ diploma - or just a piece of paper where no photo id is given? Anyone with hidden face can become a fake.

Harrasment of Minorities has been the Priority of the Bommai Govt in Karnataka. Not a day passes without News of Minorities being made to feel Hopeless, Helpless and in utter Despair in the State of Karnataka. Bommai is a Puppet in the hands of the RSS who are using Karnataka as a Laborotary to repicate the Gujarat Model. As usual the PM maintains a deafening Silence. All such Divisive issues are only to Polarise society and waste the precious time of the Courts A once Progressive state like Karnataka that was a name to reckon with around the world is being reduced to a state with continous instability, uncertainity and virtual Chaos.

She ccan go a step further by sending a substitute teacher, and can work in a madrqsa and teach English there. If the school she now teaches has a uniform requirement for students, it makes no sense for teachers not to be included, at least by prohibiting niquab and hijab in compliance with HC interim order.
