Mangaluru: Three including lady arrested for extorting Rs 50 lac from gullible woman

Mangaluru, Feb 20: Three persons including a woman have been arrested for extorting money to the tune of Rs 50 lakh from a gullible woman under relevant IPC sections and Karnataka Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act.

The victim is Swaroopa N Shetty,  a resident of Nanthoor and the arrested accused are Sharmila (48) and Mohandas (52) of Jeppinamogaru, and Sati Kiran (52) from Bantwal taluk.

Swaroopa was taking computer training classes in Jeppu. One of her student's mothers approached Swaroopa for a loan. Swaroopa arranged for the loan from her friend, accused Sharmila. Sharmila lent the student's mother Rs 10 lac at 10 percent monthly interest.  

Even after the debtor repaid the loan, the accused along with her accomplices started harassing the complainant and blackmailed her into giving away cheques. Since 2016, the accused have allegedly extorted Rs 50 lac from Swaroopa.
