Udupi: Hijab-clad girls not allowed to appear for practical exam

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Feb 28: Out of the students of the girls government PU college here who have approached the high court on the issue of wearing the Hijabs, three who are second year PU (science) students, reportedly were denied permission to appear for the practical examination scheduled on Monday February 28.

One among these students, Almas A H, in a tweet, stated that the principal did not allow her and two other science stream students of the college to appear for the practical exam today. She also accused the principal of threatening them of filing a police complaint. "We had completed our record books and were enthusiastic about attending the practicals. When we reached the college, the principal asked us to leave within five minutes, failing which he threatened us of registering police complaint against us," the student has claimed. She said that she felt distressed at this threat.

In her tweet, Almas said that the aspirations and dreams she had about the college are getting shattered because of the hatred that has been let loose against the Hijab.

Out of the girls from this PU college who have approached the high court seeking permission to attend classes with Hjabs, Amlaz, Hazra Shifa and Bibi Ayesha are second PU students.

On the final day in the school when we were in Xth Std., somebody came with an idea that we come to school in Lungi just for fun. A group of brave among the class entered the gate of the school donning the lungi and our Principal (honorable man and still respect him) ran to his office to bring the cane and these guys removed the Lungis and came running to the class and acted as if nothing happened - we got an earful for acting on a stupid idea. I was wondering then why was our Principal so upset. We then forgot that uniform is all about discipline and we throwing that out of the window even on the last day in school was not acceptable to our principal. Had he allowed that day to be uneventful, the juniors who emulate the seniors would have tread that path. He stopped the nonsense then and there.

David Pais, jossey Saldanha. If you were asked to drop the cross or any other religious or cultural identity, which is protected under constitution, what will you do? Are you interested in them getting educated? Then stand for what is right. Court said interim order, not final. We the same people will say, you shed your hijab then, why wear it now.

All of a sudden Hijab is important. Not education? When in Private Education Institutions Hijab prohibited At then one has to adhere to it .When not want to leave ,then sit at home. When we want both is difficult to keep legs in two boats ?Or want to ones own will ?It is understable behind a Hijajb any weapons or any other person than the person hiding?or even exam material hidden?Once remove your hijab before entering the hall and then wear it back when coming out.It cant be so difficult be or?or want own will to break through the wall?

Dear Sisters, I fully support your decision. Please don't take your hijab, come what may, even if you have to sacrifice your education and sit at home.

Exactly! Unlike France and Sri Lanka, there is no public ban on hijab in India, except in educational institutions with prescribed uniforms and where hijab is not included in the uniform. Anybody is free to wear hijab or burkha while traveling, shopping , visiting theatre or any other public place. This is what the people need to understand from the minister’s statement.

Not only in France, Srilanka also banned in Morocco, Indonesia, Kazakastan, Syria, Algeria, Egypt (Misr), Iraq, Tunisia and many more european countries. Even in Saudi Arabia it as been relaxed. People in India are trying to prove Islam started from India itself.

Correct, John Tauro...although I dont know if France n Sri Lanka have banned Hijab or just Burqa which covers face entirely. There's no ban on wearing Superman or Batman costume, so it does not mean a student can wear it to school or college especially which has prescribed a uniform. Any garment worn in addition or any part of uniform not worn (eg if theres a tie) results in prescribed uniform not being followed. This whole issue has gotten so muddied. Hijab being referred to as headscarf...it is not necessarily just a headscarf. Students who enrolled knowing the uniform cannot claim right to wear a hijab suddenly mid term. They need to find a school/college where its allowed. Schools / Colleges that permitted a headscarf or hijab of prescribed type should not suddenly stop its use. They require to allow it until end of 2/3 years course of the students and if necessary make new rule applicanle only for new students. Sadly many girls who until now were not wearing the hijab will now be forced to wear it to show solidarity with their community.
