Mangaluru, Mar 5: Environmentalists are creating a lot of awareness over the preservation of the environment and planting saplings. Several such environmentalists have set an example in giving importance towards the environment and working relentlessly on saving mother earth.

In an unfortunate incident, a tree was set on fire and burnt near the entrance of the football ground next to town hall. Environmentalists are disheartened to witness something like this.

A few days ago, a tree was set on fire near Alangar recently. Later environmentalist Ganesh, RJ Rashmi Ullal and deputy reserve forest officer Ashwith Gatty rushed to the spot to douse the fire and tried to save the tree.

Now, a similar incident has taken place near the town hall, where a tree has been burnt.

Reacting to the incident, environmentalist and social worker RJ Rashmi Ullal said, “The environmentalists are striving hard to create awareness to save the environment and plant saplings. But it is unfortunate to witness trees being burnt. People’s mindset of setting trees on fire is sad. Recently, I received a call from Ganesh saying that a tree has been burnt near the highway at Alanagar. We informed the concerned department to douse the fire and save the tree. It is unfortunate to see a tree being burnt near the town hall. I urge the concerned department to take swift action against this. It is not only the environmentalists’ duty to save trees, but the responsibility of every individual. I request everyone not to harm trees, instead plant saplings and take care of the environment.”

District student in-charge of Human Rights Protection Forum and member of National Environmental Conservation Federation, Bhavan, filed a complaint to forest officer Prashanth to take swift action against the culprit for setting fire to the tree. Bhavan also said that the tree will not survive.

The authorities should swing into action and take measures to see that the people behind this insane act are arrested and sent to jail. I consider this a very serious offence and this affects each and every one of us. No mercy should be shown to those who burn down the trees or cut them without a valid reason. This is our national property.
