Bengaluru: CM approves plan to clear solid waste pile at Pachanady

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Mar 10: The state government told the high court that the chief minister has given his approval for the plan to clear solid waste stockpile that has accumulated in the landfill unit at Pachanady over the last many years.

A public interest litigation filed by Karnataka State Legal Services Authority was taken up for consideration by a division bench headed by Chief Justice, Ritu Raj Awasthi, on Wednesday March 9. During the previous hearing, the high court had instructed the state government to hasten the cabinet clearance of the proposal as the same is pending for too long. The petitioner has alleged that the landfill unit has been contaminating the water of River Phalguni, from which drinking water is supplied.

Additional advocate general, Dhyan Chinnappa, who appeared on behalf of Mangalore City Corporation, informed that the chief minister had given his assent for a plan costing Rs 73 crore for clearing the solid waste at Pachanady that had suffered landslide some years back and created a crisis of sorts for a large area including houses and other structures.

The additional advocate general also said that the city corporation commissioner, on March 8, issued consent letter to the party whose tender has been accepted, and that work on the same will begin soon.

CM sir, please learn from this Mumbai example: When people come today to the Mahim Nature Park (MNP) they find it difficult to believe that, the forest they see before their very eyes was once a city garbage dump. But that is exactly what it was less than 20 years ago.Conceived by the WWF-India in the late 1970s, an area of about 37 acres in the “H” Block of Bandra-Kurla Complex, which was earlier a garbage dump or land fill, was decided to be ecologically restored and developed as a Nature Park by MMRDA. Located on Bandra-Sion Link Road and on the Southern bank of Mithi River (which starts from Borivali National Park highlands skirting the airport and meets the Arabian Sea at Mahim Bay and which is one of the major drainages of Mumbai),this mini-forest is nothing short of a miracle. Apart from being a vital green lung for pollution-ridden Mumbai, the MNP also offers Mumbai’s citizenry a welcome change from the din and hustle of city life. Today experts from around the world visit the MNP to study how so many trees could grow on a dumping ground used for decades by the Municipal Corporation of Mumbai. Naturalists from the Bombay Natural History Society and the World Wide Fund for Nature-India confirm that MNP plays host to about 38 species of butterflies and more than 80 species of birds. What is more, as many as 200 tree species have been listed, many naturally planted by birds and insects. When you walk in the precincts of the MNP you will see numerous insects, amphibians and reptiles and together with the many species of fungi that thrive, the place has a feel of true woodland.

Most areas in Mangalore eg. Kotimura road near Red bricks, Kaikamba market area are in themselves huge garbage dumps. All this talk about smart City n green city is rubbish. Clean city is basic right of every individual. Authorities need to spread awareness. Impose strict action on violators esp on people dumping and putting waste water in unauthorised areas.

No government can help the cause of rotting rubbish unless we as people get responsible. Like in Japan and Singapore this basic hygiene practice must be a part of curriculum. Irresponsible dumping/throwing of rubbish is the habit of majority of the people among us.
