Udupi: Massive, rare type of carpenter shark fished out in Malpe

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (HB)

Udupi, Mar 10: An extremely rare and endangered species of sawfish or carpenter shark was caught by a fishermen boat in Malpe on Thursday, March 10.

It is estimated that it weighs around 250 kgs. A huge crowd thronged the harbour to get a glimpse of the giant fish.

The strange looking fish was shifted from the boat to a truck with the help of a crane.

It is learnt that the sawfish has been transported to Mangaluru.

It is said that the population of this type of species is likely on a decline due to various reasons. They are usually found in tropical and subtropical regions in Coastal marine.

It's a very very rare species of shark; in the US, it would attract a fine of 10k$.

So sad to see a loss of rare species. Who is going to buy and eat this fish? They should have immediately released this fish back to sea. Though, it is the responsibility of the concerned authorities to inform the fishermen about endangered species, but these fishermen also have equal responsibility to protect the ecosystem.

Fishermen loot the natural resources free of cost and sell it to us at exorbitant prices. If any tribal people venture into forests to fetch honey or tender bamboo shoots, they will be arrested!!

This fish is listed as Schedule I in the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972. This act may invite fishermen in the legal action. Concerned authorities should create awareness in this matter

True. But, how fishermen will come to know if such rare species gets trapped into their nets? Once the net is brought up only they will realise. Sometimes, deep fishing takes so many days....
