Sports Ministry Sanctions Cash Award for Medal Winners

New Delhi, Jan 18 (IANS) The Sports Ministry has sanctioned cash awards for 286 medallists of the New Delhi Commonwealth Games and the Guangzhou Asian Games.

The cash awards, totalling Rs.22.57 crore, are being given under the 'Scheme of Special Awards' to winners of medals in international events, the ministry said in a statement Monday.

"Cash awards worth Rs.5.10 crore have already been given to Asian Games gold medallists," the statement added.

The money for winners of medals in Commonwealth Games and Asian Games was doubled in October 2010. Under the scheme, gold medallists will get Rs.20 lakh, silver medallists Rs.10 lakh and bronze medallists Rs.6 lakh.
