Udupi: Muslim street vendors request temples for stalls at Hindu festivals, fairs

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS/HB)

Udupi, Mar 21: Mohammed Arif, secretary of Udupi District Street Vendors’ and Traders’ Association urged that the Muslim street vendors be allowed to carry out business during Hindu festivals and Hindu temple fairs.

Speaking at the Press Club in city, Arif said, “During Kaup Marigudi festival banners were put that Muslim vendors should not be allowed. Now the same is being displayed in Padubidri temple festival also. We do not know what is our sin. So far all Hindu and Muslim vendors were doing business like brothers."

“Earlier Muslim street vendors used to do business in festivals of all temples. First restriction on Muslim vendors was placed at the festival of Odabhandeshwara temple. Now Muslim vendors are not being allowed to open shops in the mela of Perdoor, Pernankila and Padubidri temples also," he lamented.

“Some organizations are behind this. We will never indulge in hurting the sentiments of our Hindu brethren. If the temple administration calls us for discussion, we are ready," he said.

“Due to Covid, temple festivals were not taking place. Only now some improvement is there. Now for some reason we are being prevented from doing business. We request the temple administrative committees to allow us to do business like before.”

Vice president Mohammed Ibrahim, Yasin Kemmannu and Hameed Nejar were present.

This is highly unfair. Poor innocent vendors shouldn’t be punished for controversial communal issues created by radicalized fanatical organizations. The temple authorities should allow them to continue their business as they have been doing in the past.

Instead of calling press meet, these leaders of organisation should talk to other side and sort it out amicably. We could feel this divide happening for some time now. Hijab issue has really widened the divide and the bandh called for by some organisation after the court verdict has made it worse. Leaders of both side specially those in business should be careful while falling prey for some incidents specially planted by some vested interest groups. Now it is very difficult to bridge the divide. Both communities should understand that they are interdependent to lead a peaceful and happy life. Divide will destroy the goodwill built over a long period of time.

There is misconception about oil from Gulf, It is USA is the largest oil supplier to India, Russia and Iran always ready to supply oil to India at lower rate, GCC needs India more than India needs their oil and gas, If oil is the weapon for blackmail Israel would have gone bankrupt..

Poor street vendors should not be discriminated in Temple feasts based on their religion, they are earning their livelihood, Temple authorities should not snatch their subsistence of bread-butter, we have been seeing 'Saibers' selling stuff in our temple festivals since childhood, why this unfair iniquity now .....

Last month in February Ullal Dargah committee put a banner to allow people from all communities to do business during uroos. We can notice musim organizations across india extending all kind of help and support during hindu religious festivals. This is the difference of thoughts between two communities.

This is the cause of spreading hatred speeches against comunity and religions by few political leaders. If this type of behaviour continues then our India will not become improvement. Remember in many gulf countries and European countries there are many Hindu business men doing the business. If this hate increases in India. Sure it will effect worldwide as well. May be the majority comunity thinks that it will not effect them. But slow by slow it will effect out children's future.

It can be done if the Halal laws are amended and non-muslims are also allowed to work in halal meat industry. Step by step, apply all rules equally for all religions, and then we can achieve real secularism.

Pity for having the class of response from an educated thought processing head. If we go by your logic 99.99% victims in India believed to be are from muslim community but yet they maintained communal harmony by allowing people of other faith to do business during their festivals. Eventhough if we agree you for the sake of arguement why these poor street vendors have to paying for others mistakes.

There has to be a reason why Muslims are forbidden from having stalls. What are the reason they have not got space for selling their wares. Is it any stalls or food stalls only. In the past were they any issues. Have they complied with the earlier terms and conditions of doing business in the area. There has to be something, which is not being reported.
