Mangaluru, Apr 1: Additional sessions and second fast track special court convicted accused, who had sexually harassed and impregnated a minor girl, who gave birth to a baby, to 10 years imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 30,000.
Vamana Poojary (59), resident of Sasihithlu near Surathkal is the accused who is convicted by the court.
On a particular day, in September 2016, during day time, when the victim minor girl was alone at home, accused Vamana Poojary enticed her and sexually harassed the girl and threatened her not to reveal the matter to anyone. The girl got pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl on March 29, 2019.
A case in this connection was registered at Surathkal police station. Later it was confirmed through DNA test that Vamana Poojary is the father of the child.
Surathkal SI H M Poovappa had investigated the case and chargesheet was filed by inspector Cheluvaraju. The inquiry of the case was done by justice K M Radhakrishna.
The accused is sentenced to 10 years in prison under column six of POCSO and fined Rs 30,000. If the convict fails to pay the fine, he has to undergo two months of simple prison sentence. One year of simple imprisonment is also slapped on the convict under IPC 506 for threatening the victim with life.
Justice Radhakrishna also ordered to pay Rs four lac to the victim from the government as compensation. Special public prosecutor C Venkataramanaswamy had argued for the prosecution.
