Bengaluru, Apr 5: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai paid homage to former Deputy Prime Minister and Dalit icon Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram on his 115th birth anniversary by garlanding his photo and also the statue near Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday.
“Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram was a rare personality and the architect of green revolution in the country,’’ the Chief Minister said recalling the contribution of the Dalit community’s stalwart who rose to stellar heights despite being born in a poor family in Bihar and suffering difficulties and even insults in his life.
Bommai said Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram’s contribution as the country’s agriculture minister and the architect green revolution was mainly responsible for India achieving self-sufficiency in foodgrains production. He served for the security of the country as the Union Defence Minister, the Chief Minister said.
He said the people must observe his birth anniversary as Dalit Awakening Day as Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram strove for the upliftment of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
