When Death Comes Like a Thief...

When Death Comes Like a Thief...

Mangalore, Feb 3, 2011

There have been a spate of incidents within a span of this one month which made me contemplate a lot and finally compelled me to write.

The Bible clearly says “Death comes like a thief”, which often makes us ponder over this aspect of death. Despite our herculean efforts to unravel this mystery of death we are unable to come anywhere closer in finding a satisfactory answer to this.

It is said that “birth is accidental but death is certain,” which means that death is inevitable and we have to accept this well-known and universal fact. But ‘how death comes’ is a question that we human beings need to ponder over, especially when we come across instances of sudden or untimely deaths.

When it comes to death, old age is one of the factors which one cannot avoid. Constant improvements in the medical field have helped us to delay death upto a certain age in many cases. However, it is the unexpected or unforeseen deaths that cause inconceivable misery and pain to family members, close relatives and near and dear ones, many of who are unable to come to terms with such sudden loss and rebuild their lives.

When death enfolds us in the form of accidents, I am sure, no one is prepared for it. But almost everyday we  come across instances of precious lives being lost in accidents. People perish due to their own mistakes or pay with their lives for the mistakes of others. A small mistake or an error of judgment may prove costly for self and for the lives of others. One can only call it destiny. Unexpected murders or suicides too perplex us to a great extent. Here too, death is unexpected, except in instances of suicides where the person may contemplate the act for long or may commit it on the spur of the moment unable to control his own tumultuous feelings.

Ill health quite often comes without any indication and all of a sudden a person who we often presume to be in good health may fall sick and perish. Except in age-related sickness, many are able to overcome diseases or come to live with some common ones. A few others succumb to them.

At this moment, I recall the death of a relative of a close friend of mine,  who was in his early 30’s. When I asked the cause of his sudden death, my friend told me, 'he collapsed all of a sudden while partying….' He confirmed that it was a massive heart attack that resulted in his instant death. But I was left dumbfounded when my friend confided that this young boy who was just 31, had no modern lifestyle diseases like cholesterol, diabetes or blood pressure. Just three weeks back he had undergone a complete medical check up and there was no complaint whatsoever and he was certified to be a healthy young man. With such a clean medical history, when I began to wonder and asked him how it could happen he just said, "Perhaps it was a call from God."

Maybe that is the only answer one could give because even expert doctors who went through his medical reports were astounded at the death of a young boy at a time when he was at the peak of his youth.

Deaths like this scare us out of our wits and I can only say that this true incident is a living proof to show that death indeed comes like a thief.

To tell you another incident, just last week the mother of an acquaintance of mine in Mumbai died all of a sudden at the age of 55. She was hale and healthy and had no medical problems. For her own satisfaction she used to undergo routine medical check ups every six months. Since her medical history was clean she was not under medication and doctors also did not advice any medication for her. She slept as usual at 10 pm after watching TV and saying goodnight to her children, never to wake up again.

Her sudden demise also became a subject of discussion and many still keep wondering what could be the cause of her death. One can only term her unexpected death as ‘a call from God’ and here too death came like a thief.

Now, coming to the passing away of the little angel Tanisha Rego, I am unable to say anything except to accept it as a call from God and that death came like a thief without giving us any indication. It is a hard fact that she will not be with us any more!

Pics by Dayananda Kukkaje

I am unable to come to terms with her death as I still have vivid memories of this little girl who wished me on my birthday just a few days ago. Exactly 10 days before her death, we had a small party and she kissed me on my cheeks and said ‘uncle happy birthday…’ with her cute smile. I must confess I cannot forget that touch and the cute smile all my life. That was the last time I saw and met her. Being closely associated with this family especially with Leslie Rego, I am not able to explain the despair and pain the entire family is going through in accepting this reality of life.

Though the pain of losing their child will always be there, both Leslie and Blossom have come to accept this hard reality of life, leaving everything in the hands of God. But Tanisha’s siblings Belisha and Nihal, are unable to digest the fact that their little sister will not be back into this world again.

Tanisha who was cheerful and healthy till Sunday was admitted to hospital for fever and vomiting. By Monday evening doctors lost hope of recovery sending the family in a pall of gloom. With doctors giving up hopes despite their best efforts, nothing could be done to save little Tanisha’s life. Doctors termed it as 'viral encephalitis’ where there are very little chances of survival when it afflicts children. Even if children survive this, they are likely to become mentally challenged.

We can only say that it was God’s call that took away angelic Tanisha from amidst us. Though none of us is permanent in this world, it is not easy to accept the untimely death of a blossoming child, especially for the family members. None can understand the pain or the trauma of the parents and the family members. We can only console the family saying that though little Tanisha is dead and gone she will live with us all with the fond memories of the little time she spent on this earth.

In the case of Tanisha too death came like a thief…

May God bless us all.

Walter - You have rightly said that DEATH COMES LIKE A THIEF. As the saying goes Death is certain but no one knows WHEN - HOW AND WHERE. We come to this world WITH NOTHING and we leave this world with NOTHING. several of us believe in LIFE AFTER DEATH. The good will be rewarded and the bad will be punished. This is not only Christian Faith but also a concept understood by other religions too who believe in avatar.

It is not difficult to lead a good and an examplery life and indirectly you are conveying this message to all the READERS of Daijiworld.

    Thanks for the message.

Dear Walter, your article is a reminder to all that there is no joy in life except love and contentment. Life is so short that if it is not lived in God it becomes useless nd hopeless. Young and old die, but real strength comes from God for anyone even on death bed. Tanisha's sad demise is an eye opener that we can be carried away at any time from our life. May God console her family.

In my opinion, in the eyes of God, there is nothing called hindu, muslim, christian, congress, BJP, JDS or Bajrang. All are his equal creations.

Greed and ambitions makes death scary, contentment and acceptance makes death a pleasure.

When we are young, strong and monied we fight against one another in the name of religion and politics. When death comes it comes equally on all whether you are hindu, muslim, christian, congress, BJP, JDS or Bajrang. Death does not differenciate between people at all. It is really sad that people don't realise this.

I fully agree with you, when we think & talk Spiritually on the subject. But in reality, and especially when it comes to our own/ near & dear ones, it is not easy to accept this truth. Most of us do not have that much faith within us and we are scared of death & cannot bear it when we lose someone our own. Anyway, Thanks for your very strong spiritual faith and also Thanks Mr. Walter for the wonderful article. May God bless us all!

Respected Editor, I thank you for your wonderful informative article which expresses very emotional and almost tearful. I prayed for Tanisha once the news was out in daijiworld web portal but God has His own plans for us. As Job said in the Holy Bible Job 2:10 What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? He only gave us good things when He gives us good things can't we accept bad things also but humans need, faith, courage, patience and peace of mind which was lost in the present generation
Jesus said unless you are a child like this you cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven(Matthew 18:3) and Tanisha is a child and surely she will be in heaven. Hence rejoice not that she is physically dead but her soul/spirit is alive. Once again I express my heart felt condolences through the core of my heart to the bereaved surviving family and children. May Jesus our Lord and savior guide you protect you and keep you close under His tremendous care and love.

Dear Walter, It would have been great if you could have explained death in a realistic and happier version, than make it sound scary.

To me death means begining of eternal life, and there is nothing to be afraid of, or give it the appearance of a thief.

We should accept and celebrate death, the same way we celebrate with joy the birth of a child.

God sends every one of us to this world for a specific purpose, and what that specific purpose is, we are incapable of understanding, and after that specific purose is done, God calls us back in ways, beyond any one`s imagination.

In my opinion death should be viewed as a joyous event, since the soul joes back to the creator, and we should thank God for taking her/him to the promised paradise.

The best way to accept death by those left behind is to look up to the heaveans and say " Lord Thy WILL be done."

"Death comes into the room and leaves an awful silence.
Loss is never welcomed or convenient. The time of grief is lonesome, stressful and awkward. You feel betrayed, confused and as if someone hit you in the stomach. You need great patience with your slow healing heart. You are angry one moment and sad the next moment. May the Lord show you His tender mercies, strength and peace in the days ahead. May He surround you with the love and comfort of family and friends.
As much as we would like to avoid loss and the unpleasantness in our lives, sometimes it is inescapable. Instead, we must learn how to grieve in healthy ways and work through our difficulties.

Much of the emotional distress during the early stages of grief results from an identity crisis. You ask yourself, "Who am I now? I'm no longer someone's daughter or wife or best friend. Where do I get my strength from now? Who will know me like my loved one who is gone too soon? Who do I say I am now?
"I will not forget you. I have carved you on the palm of my hand." — Isaiah 49:15

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."

But nobody want to accept that one day we have to go, we in this world live like we are here for ever, without proper understanding, no forgiveness, hatred and above all no respect to the creator. Hours, days, weeks, months or years, infancy or teen years or old age, are all moments in terms of eternity, and we should all be thankful to God that He has given us a taste of living in this physical world.
There are of course many old persons who long for death because of their inability to live by themselves or due to extreme pain aand wonder when their turn will come. We are so sad to see and hear of the deaths of little ones and those in prime of life. Even here we should all trust in the Almighty that when He wills it our turn will come.
    God bless you!
    Mohan

A thought provoking article, and the simple analysis made by Mr. Walter is very deep in nature. Reality is harsh but there is no other alternative than accepting it. During the crisis like this, people always need some one to console and to support.

My heart goes to little angel Tanish Rego, and heartfelt condolences with her parents. Let God give the strength to Belisha and Nihal to overcome this grief and

Heart touching words Walty Baab - God bless you. I say today our angel Tanisha is not with us but she is happy that God the Almighty is with her Parents and her beloved sister and brother. She will be right away sitting at the right hand of Jesus as she deserves that place. She was gifted by God to my beloved Leslie and Blossom but had to fade away so soon and in this way I am sure that WE ARE FROM ONE GOD AND WE ARE TO GOD A DAY. Thank you and I assure my continuous prayers to little angel Tanisha's beloved family who are in tragic shock and agony.

Walty Thanks a lot for writing this..

We often forget this reality.. But u know what... God has written everyoned death while coming to this world. And its a mere incident he creates to take the person dear to him. And we blame for that incident/mistakes/carelessnes..

Hope Leslie and Blossom and thier 2 children will accept this TRUTH and live in the remeberence of Tanisha.
