Udupi: Contractor ends life, holds minister Eshwarappa responsible for extreme step

Udupi, Apr 12: A man killed himself in a lodge in the city after writing a suicide note in which he has named Rural Development & Panchayat Raj (RDPR) minister K S Eshwarappa responsible for his extreme step.

The deceased has been identified as Santhosh K Patil, who was a building contractor by profession, killed himself in room no 207 of Shambhavi Lodge near KSRTC bus stand. It is learnt that he consumed poison. Two of his friends were found in an adjoining room of the same lodge.

Patil was missing from his house in Belgaum. His mobile phone was traced in Udupi city limits on Tuesday April 12 morning.

He had sent his death note to media people. In the death note he had held minister Eshwarappa responsible for his death.

Udupi city police, who rushed to the spot, are investigating further. SP Vishnuvardhan and ASP Siddalingappa also visited the spot. Forensic experts from Manipal have been called to the scene of crime. Finger print experts will be called by Udupi police, informed sources.

It may be recalled, Patil, a contractor and also a BJP leader, had accused Rural Development & Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Minister K S Eshwarappa of corruption. Patil had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he had invested Rs 4 crore on building roads in his village based on oral instructions of Eshwarappa. He accused the minister of lies, corruption and irregularities, and urged Modi to direct Eshwarappa to settle his bills.

SP Vishnuvardhan said that post mortem on the body of contractor Santhosh Patil, who killed himself by consuming a poison in a lodge of the city, will be held in city itself.

Giving details on the suicide of Patil, Vishnuvardhan said, “There were two other men with deceased Santhosh Patil. FSL team is arriving from Mangaluru. Relatives of Santhosh are also rushing to city. He did not kill himself by hanging. We are waiting for the relatives to reach Udupi.

“Once the relatives reach Udupi, we will continue our investigation. We are interrogating his friends. The room is already sealed.”

IGP Devajyothi Ray visits suicide spot

Western range IGP Devajyothi Ray visited the Udupi lodge where contractor Santhosh Patil had committed suicide.

The lodge is situated near KSRTC bus stand here. The mortal remains of Santhosh Patil are still in the lodge room. Police personnel are waiting for the arrival of the family members of the deceased.

Speaking to reporters, he said "We are waiting for the deceased's blood relatives to arrive. As soon as they reach the spot, further steps will be taken. It is a sensitive case. We will conduct the investigation under our forensic experts. Blood relatives will reach by tonight."
