Congress Strives to Build Bridges with Lingayat Leaders

Bangalore, Feb 4: With the possibility of dissolution of the State Assembly and snap polls appearing to be very bright, especially after Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa’s decision of presenting the State’s budget proposals for the year 2011-12 on February 24 – even ahead of the Union Budget on February 28, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee has taken upon itself the task of winning the support of the politically powerful Lingayat community.

The KPCC Chief Dr G Parameshwara, held a meeting with the party’s senior leaders, including MLAs, MLCs and former legislators, in order to assuage the community’s feelings of neglect and sought their suggestions and cooperation for strengthening the party’s oganisational base. Dr Parameshwara, who has started the exercise of meeting different sections of the society and party leaders from different districts, urged the Lingayat community leaders to sort out their differences, if any, and unitedly work for the success of the Congress party.

"You (Lingayat community) have been the strong support base and backbone of the Congress party in the State over the years. There is no question of sidelining or ignoring the interests of the community,” the KPCC chief told the meeting.

Former Deputy Chief Minister M P Prakash, who is highly regarded within the party and even outside, and several other leaders of the Lingayat Community attended the meeting convened in the backdrop of the political uncertainty dogging the Yeddyurappa regime over the various court cases against the Chief Minister in land scam and other corruption cases. ``It is time for the party to gear up for the distinct possibility of snap elections to the state assembly ahead of schedule,” Dr Parameshwar said.

Meanwhile, Dr Parameshwar, in a statement released to the press, criticised the former BJP national president Rajnath Singh for giving a clean chit to the Chief Minister and pointed out that it amounted to condoning the corruption charges against the Yeddyurappa regime.

"The clean chit demonstrates the fact that BJP high command has lost the moral right to ask the chief minister to step down over the alleged involvement in land scams, nepotism and maladministration,” he said. Dr Parameshwara said that it was pathetic that the BJP, which preaches on Hindu values and Raja Dharma had no courage to discipline its own leaders. They also seemed to be ignorant of the public anger against such an attitude, he added.

The former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee, who was upset with the pogram in Gujrat would be pained, if he comes to know the misrule of Yeddyurappa in the state, the KPCC chief added.

Satish Kunder, Mangalore/Kuwait as you are the supporter of congress you are appreciating this step taken by Parameshwar. If the BJP had done the same thing you would have definately commented against them saying that BJP is doing caste politics. To be frank the congress divided this country on the basis of caste and religion for last 60 years.

BJP supporters think that Lingayat Community is their vote bank and nobody should speak to them. There is no harm in Congress assuring them that they are also part of the Congress which gives opportunity to every caste and religion and nobody will be ignored in the party.

Where are our BJP supporters when Yedyurappa openly advocates for only Lingayat Community ignoring all other community? Dr. Parameshwar is a learned man and his comments are always balanced which is contrary to the childish comments by the president of the ruling party.

Radikar Prabhu,Mangalore it was Indhira Gandhi's era a stone, if asked for an contest in the name Gandhi it would win the elections. When BJP came in to power in centre,in the name of RAMAJANMA BHOOMI created an HINDUTVA vote bank dividing majorty and minority for it's own interest. It gave some fruits in the short term and now they are feeling the heat

BJP will not come to the power at centre hearafter because of it's puesodo nationalist agenda even if UPA raise RS 100/one LTR petrol.Lingayath is a community which benefited more in Congress but @present logarhead with Cong which may be repaired. With out community base support no party will come to power under any circumstances.Caste based politics is a reality and every party accepts the ground reality and acts accordingly.

Kab sudroge tum log, Congress party???? Being the oldest political party, you should have set a precedent in avoiding caste-based or vote-bank politics. But alas, Congress has failed the country and countrymen. Gandhiji might be pained to know the level of politics reached by Congress party.

Dr G Parameshwara, apart from Lingayat, also there is strong lobby of Vokkaligas and Billava community. Brahmins has been let down by Congress not only due to political decisions but also neglecting the poor bramins. Also there are less honest congressman.
Tough job ahead but with wise decisions you should be able to get better results.

The political parties will do the extreme for the power. They will divide the community on caste and religion. The minorities are still in backward position because of the previous governance. If you look into the history of Karnataka politics, the majority CMs were either Lingayaths or Okkaligas. They will not allow others to rule. Our south kanara was not developed during the previous regimes because of that. As we elect the MLA by voting, we should also have a right to call back the MLA when we find him corrupt. Like in Egypt, people should come on to the street and protest against these politicians. Jai Hind!!!

Parameshwar this is what you do caste politics for getting votes and least bothered about the general public. Also you cannot speak about AB Vajpayee. He is the great leader and one of the best PM of our country. Also the gujarat is the most developed state in the country under the leadership of narendra modiji. So why the Vajpayeeji will be upset. I think the congress is jealous of the development work undertaken by modiji so giving useless comments.

Mr. A B Vajpayee, who was upset with the 2002 pogrom in Gujrat would now be shocked by the Supreme Court appointed SIT report on Gujrat pogrom published in Tehelka and leading TV channels. As per SIT all the crucial evidences have been wiped out.

Addressing a particular community seeking their support for the elections ahead is congress's devide n rule policy. They should address any request of support through open addressing & not for a particular community or religion sidelining the general public.Assuring one community about the recognition for showing support to the party is violation of public faith reposed.Public must unite to reject congress for their prejudiced approach there by remind all the parties to be neutral about religation of power prior to election just to gain the seats.
