BSF recovers 8 kg silver on Indo-Bangladesh border in North 24 Paraganas

New Delhi, Apr 18 (IANS): The Border Security Force (BSF) on Monday said that troopers at Border Out Post (BoP) Garjala in West Bengal's North 24 Paraganas have recovered 8.275 kg silver ornaments hidden in the field at India Bangladesh border.

Recovery of silver ornaments was made on April 16 during a search operation in a nearby field close to the fencing which was concealed there for smuggling purposes, an official of the South Bengal Frontiers said.

The estimated cost of these recovered silver ornaments is over Rs four lakh.

On April 13, the Force's troopers recovered nearly 17kg of silver worth over Rs 12.22 lakh from two smugglers at BoP Ghojadanga. On the same day during frisking of a suspicious motorcyclist at BoP Boryaghat near Indo-Bangladesh border under Murshidabad district, eight gold biscuits worth Rs 49.88 lakh concealed in his shoes were recovered.

A source in the security set up said that there is huge demand for gold and silver ornaments made by the jewellers in West Bengal especially in Kolkata and these ornaments fetch handsome returns in Bangladesh market because of its fine finishing.

Apart from gold and silver, the Bangladeshi smugglers smuggle narcotics, liquor and banned cough syrup Phensedyl from the Indian side because of its availability at a relatively cheaper price in India.
