Mangalore, Feb 7: Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy organized a unique Mehendi and cookery competition at Kadri Park here on Sunday February 6.

As many as 60 Muslim ladies took part in the cookery contest and 53 enthusiastically participated in the Mehendi contest. Varieties of traditional cuisines mainly cooked in the Beary (Muslim) homes were prepared by the ladies at the contest. Prominent among them were Erchiro Pinde, Kuvurolo Pinde, Ettiro Pinde, Basarelo Pinde, Naiyappa, Pudiyampuleppa, Muttero Appa and so on.

"The Academy’s main intention was to organize something basically meant for the women, to give them a opportunity to display their skills and encourage them", said Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy Chairman M B Abdul Raheman.  He also added that it is for the first time such a contest has been organized for the community ladies in the city.

The food items prepared by the ladies are of rare quality and are not available in any restaurants. The display of items with wonderful decorations gave a magnificent look to the park. The tasty food items were appreciated by the judges.

The winners of both the competitions were awarded with prizes. The cultural programme began with a solo song by Mohammad Faiz. The tri-monthly, titled Belkiri was launched by Saaduddin Salih, an advocate, at the event.
