Don’t Pass on Your Wealth to Next Generation: Premji

Mumbai, Feb 10 (DHNS): Wipro chairman Azim Premji called upon Indian industry leaders to give their wealth back to the society on Wednesday.

“People who have had the fortune to accumulate wealth should give it back to the society rather than passing it on to subsequent generations,” he said, while addressing the delegates at Nasscom Leadership Forum 2011.

The idea that the next generation of the family has a right to inherit wealth is not tolerable as it would increase the gap between haves and have-nots in the society, he said. He urged the industry to look at Egypt to understand the impact of widening income gap in the society. The turbulence in Egypt is likely to spread to few other Middle East countries as well, he noted.

Premji noted that the idea that the rich should commit their wealth to the benefit of society is gaining in USA, Europe and other parts of the world, including India.

The rare candid speech showed a usually reticent Premji talking the walk he has already made. He recently pledged to transfer shares valued at 90.7 billion rupees ($2 billion) to his trust, Azim Premji Foundation, and use the dividends to improve education facilities in India.

Earlier Premji noted that feeling threatened by China, the US and European CEOs were looking at India as an alternative to spread the geography risk. “Despite the problems we create for ourselves and the governance being in shambles, India was benefiting from this trend,” he said. As the economic growth in the West slowed, companies would have to embrace globalisation, diversify talent pool, cut cost and design products for the emerging markets.  As customers in emerging markets sought more value for money and more rugged solutions, companies would have to ‘build up’ products for these markets. He noted that GE’s low-cost healthcare products initially designed for India market, were finding a market elsewhere. They are being sold even in USA and Europe where customers had become more cost conscious, he said.

Globalisation also required that work forces moved across the national boundaries freely, the way good and services did, and putting protectionist barriers would be counter-productive, he said. The US will pay a price for what it is doing , he said referring to the recent spate of protectionist measures initiated by that country.

This Nagesh Nayak seems to be obsessed with criticising Congress, Sonia Gandhi & Praising BJP, Yeddy. He is shamelessly supporting Yeddy despite the exposes with documentary evidence regarding his scams. The evidence was so strong that Yeddy was forced to ask his sons, family members to surrender the illegally allottes sites/lands. What more proof does he want? Did he get a share or site from Yeddy? What about the involvement of Ananth Kumar in housing corporation scam, the same Ananth Kumar & Pramod Mahajan is sale of ITDC Hotels, involvement of Pramod Mahajan, Arun Jaitely in 2G scam before DMK's Raja? What about Janardhana Reddy & their illegal mining? What did Hartalu Halappa, Ramachandra Gowda, Katta Subramanya Naidu & son do? Is not the BJP partner with Shibu Soren & Munda? What did Bangaru Lakshman do? What bark about Congress, Sonia Gandhi on each & every issue? Let him comment sensibly.

Definately a brilliant idea premji sir !!! but dont understand why you are still holding more then 80% stake in WIPRO and struggling to manage it on your own. Please dilute the stakes to empoyees/general public...there seems to be a severe lack of leadership at WIPRO which is a major concern whne you hold on to all the stakes

What a NOBLE thought! Are industry big-wig listen's to these. So, our dirty politicians! Noble thinking and thoughts are divine & so, very rarely lived on earth. It will be very interesting to note Premji's will!

If the siphoned money brought back & distributed to citizens, we all will become richer or at least "have nots"! I for one would have appreciated immensely Premji's warning on SCAMS & CORRUPTION rather than passing on the wealth. It is people in politics (eg: #1 citizen of INDIA, the President) not saying a word & keeping silence alone kills our country. It is a fact that Kings & paupers are none other than Humans. In some cultures (esp. India), it is hereditary amass wealth & others kill and take over the wealth.

When law & order itself is so corrupt, a bloody revolution is a must for ensure justice. We need to ELIMINATE corrupt officials, all through. Because this fear alone will better our country and PSYCHE of our people.

What's happening in Egypt, deemed for INDIA, sooner or later. Our scams such volumes and multi-folds and ethics of public governance at it's shameful low, revolution is the need of the hour!

Here readers are doubting the words of Premji on the basis of some silly issues. Is it the fault of Premji to inehrit the wealth from his father. He deserved it as he is giving it back to the society. Again, putting his son in a high position is not a crime and is not contrary to his commitment to the society. In fact it is a good decision as the son may be as noble as his father due to the gene factor.

Whether Sonia and Rahul Gandhi deserve the high positions in the Indian politics. Please think of political families like Deve Gowda and Yediyurappa, who are looting the society for their kith and kin.

In these circumstances we should respect people like Premji.

Though I fully agree with the thoughts of Mr. Premji, I am at a loss to know, whether Mr. Premji would have become, what he is today, without the wealth acquired by him, from his ancestors.

Mr.Asim Premji, was forced to discontinue his engineering studies in the States due to the untimely death of his father.

Returning to India to take charge of a cooking oil company, the youth infused new life into the family's traditional mindset and trade.

If the above info about Premji`s life, taken from the net is true, then, he is partly a product of wealth acquired from previous generation and not a self made man, who can proudly say, "Don’t Pass on Your Wealth to Next Generation."

Premji should disclose his will to know the truth. And another thing why has he put his son in his own company in a very high position? Should have given that post to someone more deserving in the society.
After all what he has today is inherited from his father.

Did Premjee ever said he gives all his wealth back to Society? No.
He wishes to give a part of his wealth. It is a noble guester. God Bless him.

What Premjee said, I think, is like what Warren Buffet said -"Leave your kids enough to do anything, but not enough to do nothing".

It conveys the simple meaning -
"do not spoil your children by giving them too much but give them sufficient and let the rest wealth go to the Society.

So to say, "do not make your kids lazy by doing nothing for they got too much wealth from their father but at the same time do not make them beg, instead keep enough for them to do whatever they want to do to progress like their father".

Wealth creation is antidote for poverty. Most of our businessmen should do what they are best at create more wealth. All sucessful businesses should have CSR(corporate Social responsibility) activities.
Industries create employment. Employment gives food, education , health and improves society.CSR activities aid social service.
The problem with India is dishonest money. It is stashed away or hidden and society does not benifit.Only two things are necessary for our India.Clampdown on corruption and lowering of taxes.Seizing blackmoney will get Govt. revenue. Lowering taxes will help industrial growth.
But who can bell the corruption cat is a multi billion question.

Hats Off to Ajim Premji and his tribe.Let the gates open for more Bill Gates, Premji's and Warren Buffet's,so as to improve the living conditions of the needy,in India and across the world.

Friends, we should appreciate the good gesture, example & appeal of Azim Premji. While family members need support, those who can afford would do well to ensure that the less privileged sections of society must be given a chance & support to gain education, better health, even own a place to live besides an opportunity to come up in life. There is no point in throwing money or passing on the entire wealth to children. It is necessary to ensure that people like Azim Premji, Bill Gates Or Narayana Murthy should take up their own causes through Trusts or Foundations & ensure that the money is put to better use. Let us not quibble over unimportant or inconsequential things & try to be good human beings.

This is a 40,000 feet height talk..!!
One cannot just compare India with USA & Europe without taking into account the current situation and the system in India.
At fist in our country we need a social security system. Today there is absolutely nothing. If a person is thrown out from his job he is on the road. If a person is unable to work he has no option but to fall back on his family. This applies to all those who have paid/ paying tax and those who do not. We are not sure if we will get our PF in some states when we retire.
If this is the current situation prevailing in India with no hopes of a change then what are we talking about? First address some simple and basic things then the rest will automatically fall in place.

This is not the first time a successful business man is donating his wealth to charity see Warren Buffett 80% of wealth is pledged to charity see the world’s richest man Bill Gates they are all doing it. Premji is doing his bit to the society – may god bless him and lets take inspiration from this great man.

When Shri Premji gave this message, we the middle class were nowhere in his mind but the industry leaders. He is correct in his position. One can't expect a son to be as visionary as the father - instead, the children could be lazy, gamblers, drug-addicts, so on who will loiter the wealth in no time.

Rich or poor, one principle the parents must instill in their children is 'what you earn is yours'. This principle will guide our youth to be someone in life. Whatever the parents leave behind will be a bonus which the younger generation will know by then how to put to good use.

Education is a child's birth right if parents are not in a position to provide this, our government has several schemes in this regard. Motivation towards education should come from parents. Proper guidance will put our youth's education to correct use. One more cancer of our society is DOWRY. Girls, come forward and refuse to take any dowry from your parents (or convince your partner that there will not be any such practice in your family), we will automatically be moving towards prosperity. When you are educated and earning, expecting your parents to boot dowry is equal to blackmail by you and your future partner.

Mr. Mukesh Ambani in his recent interview to NDTV profit business awards. He had a long discussion with Mr. Bill Gates and there is lots of difference between WHAT A PERSON SPEAKS AND WHAT EXACTLY HE DOES.

The sunflower oil business is not stated from Mr. Aziz Premji. Its came from his family.

Transfering money to their charity Foundation is not a real charity. They will start schools colleges and Hospitals for rich people and collect millions of donations.

Even in the companies, I have worked from past 10 years have seen many charity works. All to save taxes and convert the black money.

Real Charity is what people like Mother Theresa, Swami from Tumkur matt have done.

Easy to preach, difficult to follow. If Premji's father also did this then he would not have been a billionaire by now.  Azim Premji also got a well established oil industry to gradually switch on to selling computers.  If one might have observed what is the value of wipro share compared to other software companies , since the last 15 years. More than 80% of the company shares are with him.

Unfortunately it's not Premji's but your comment comes out to be foolish.  He is not asking you to pass on your wealth to the society, he is doing it, this will encourage many others to follow. Don't forget they will not be passing on the entire wealth to the society, but a small portion which would otherwise be passed on to the generations. Try and understand what he is trying to say.
