Bible preaching in Bengaluru private school stirs controversy

Bengaluru, April 25 (IANS): Making non-Christian students read Bible compulsorily in Clarence High School here has created a controversy with Hindu organisations demanding cancellation of its license.

Sri Ram Sena founder Pramod Muthalik on Monday asked the school management to keep the Bible at their homes and churches. "Why is Bible being preached to Hindu students who comprise 90 per cent of the total student population in the school?" he questioned. The school must be seized and students transferred to other schools, he demanded.

Hindu Jana Jagruthi Samithi has alleged that the students are made to read the Bible everyday compulsorily. All the students have been given a Bible which is in the form of a booklet, they are told to carry it every day. If anyone objects, they are threatened with cancellation of admissions, they alleged.

The Samithi has further alleged that the school has violated and misused Article 25 of the constitution. The move amounts to violation of the guidelines of the Supreme Court, the Karnataka Education Act and Child Protection Laws. The Samithi would approach Education Minister B.C. Nagesh on this matter and demand cancellation of license of the school for forcefully imposing the Christian religion preaching to non-Christian students.

Reacting to the development, the education minister clarified that there is no provision for making the Bible reading compulsory in schools, if it is found to be true, action will be initiated against the school, he said.

George Mathew, the school Principal, has stated to the media that he is sad over the development. The Bible has been taught for 100 years. He maintained that advocates will answer all questions raised against the institution.

Contrary to expectation, religious bigotry is more in the tiny state, across the board... people preventing entry of women to temple, so many fake astrologers, sorcery practioners, men joining Extremist religious outfits... even in worst communal riots witnessed in orissa between Hindu and Christians, the Christian side was instigated by missionaries of the tiny state.....

In my opinion, all schools moved away from religious institutions. Let religious institutions teach their religion in their respective 'house of god' they own. Schools should be nationalized and teachers trained and paid very well. It should ensure that only passionate individuals become teachers and not some graduate who takes this task as 'time pass'. This will ensure that there is no religious influence even subtly by those whose primary job is to propagate their faith. In addition, priority for job in all sectors should be given to those who graduate from non religious institutions. The religious institution graduates can do well in policing, societal upkeep such as improving poor areas, civic hygiene.

I feel this is false propoganda. No Christian schools will teach holy bible to all the students. Catholics are taught catechism and non catholics moral science till 12 th i mean puc. For degree students one subject called "value education" is taught for all the students. This value education is not the extract from any holy book of any religion. There are certain guidelines to be followed by the education dept. School owners/correspondents cannot do anhthing as per their own wishes.....Simply spoiling the name of school because of some crooked ulterior motives....What central govt is doing ? Why in karnataka controversies over controversies ? What CM sir Bommai ? Is this yoir administration?.

Oh...if he has confirmed that then this is his fault and he shouldn't have done this. Yes....he must be keralite. Normally, Roman catholics do not distribute bibles like that and they never go to house to house. There are so many sub faiths in Christianity and kerala its more. One of the faiths must be owning this school. Anyway, thanks a lot for the clarification...Some people create problems inspite of so many controversies happening here in our state...Unnecessarily rest people are targetted....Cant follow his faith at home ??....

If the school management does like this, one by one schools will be closed & new schools will be opened. Majority of students to all the schools in this country are from Hindu community & the school management does this blunder which of course force the Hindu community to open their own schools, colleges & thereby force the Christian schools to close one by one due non availability of required number of students. Better correct yourself than it's too late. Bible teaching confine to your home only, better teach students the skill sets to live life even during toughest time in life.

Bible should be taught in all the Christian schools without fail. When parents do the admission of their children they are briefed about the terms and conditions of the school. Later parents can't dictate terms to the school management. If the government can impose bagvadgita in government schools, why not Christian schools impose Bible and Muslim schools Kuran?

It’s a private school and school has been following ministry of education’s guidelines for more than 100 years without any issue. If there is any issue then let the parents of the students approach the school and clarify the matter. This is BJP’s only Double Engine development, making mountain out of mole hill for media attention and vote bank to appease Hindu votes.

This school has been around for ages and so far no one had a problem. Why all this nonsense has started after BeeJayPee came to rule after Operation Lotus.. Why have these right wing and fringe elements got a dree hand to create havoc.. The normal practice in Christian Schools is Doctrine being taught to Christian students and Moral Science to non Christians. Is this another tactic to target Christian institutions which have been pioneers in education and gave rendered excellent education and nurtured good human beings.. Its a shame that these very same people want to send their children to Christian institutions and create havoc and mistrust in society. If they have concerns they should moce their chikdren to hindu instututions where they are taught and allowed to practice what they want..Looking at the way things are unfolding its time for people to think what they want and act accordingly and elect a hovernmeny who can provide good governance and harmonious society and not let the state andcountry become a jungle raj/ bannana republic..

Still remember that, during the moral sceience class Christian students were going to nearby church for the Bible class and Hindu students were attending the moral science class in the school itself. Vikhasji , it's comman scene . In all religions Holy Book, same thing is given in different ways,( I hope if read some holy books you will come to know.) , so each schools or administration will decide to select from which book. This one way to put in students mind good thoughts and to understand them that there is no much difference in religion.

This is a private school, they can do what they want. Parents are not forced to enroll their students here. It's their choice. If you don't like the school's policies you don't have to join. Simple. It is the private school's freedom to teach what they want and the private citizen's freedom to join or not.
