Cairo, Feb 13 (DPA) Hundreds of demonstrators remained in Cairo's Tahrir square Sunday, two days after the resignation of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, as the first cabinet meeting since his departure was scheduled to take place later in the day.

They were still in the square, the focal point of demonstrations over the past three weeks, although life began to return to normal in the capital as Sunday marked the beginning of the work week in Egypt.

The protesters continued to press their demands for further moves including the lifting of the state of emergency, dissolving the parliament and constitutional amendments.

The Higher Council of the Armed Forces, now running the country, has promised to oversee a peaceful transition towards a democratically elected, civilian-led government.

It also said that the cabinet would remain in place until a new government was formed.

Over one million people celebrated in Tahrir, or Liberation, square after Mubarak stepped down Friday following 18 days of massive protests across the country.
