Mangaluru, May 5: Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will conduct a clearance drive of unauthorised fast food vendors from May 7 to enforce a ban on use of single use plastic products and seize such goods on the basis of complaints received from multiple sources.

In a statement, the MCC commissioner has said as per the notification issued by the Ministry of Forest, Environment and Wildlife on 11-03-2016 and the National Green Tribunal order, the civic body issued a ban of single use plastic products.

“However, it has been brought to the notice of MCC that the orders are being violated by commercial vendors,” the MCC said in a statement.

The MCC stated that health inspectors have been directed to seize plastic goods and issue fines against similar offences, adding that in case of violations, vendors will be fined ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 10,000 along with being booked under Section 19 of the 1986 Environmental (Conservation) Act.

The commissioner also said trading licences of vendors will stand cancelled in case of violations.

The civic body has informed vendors to vacate immediate in case of violations or face due consequences.

The ban on single use plastics is as much a farce as the ban on vinyl banners. A 5 minute drive through the main thoroughfares of the city will reveal vinyl banners illegally erected everywhere, mainly carrying the mug shots of the 'beloved' leaders from our ruling party. These smug faces on the banners are the license for those flouting the civic rules.

Plastic has been deeply embraced by today's world... We are now facing reverse embracing by plastic in the same manner as Dritharashtra's ALINGAN... Old packaging of India was mocked as outdated and out of vogue... But today world is coming back to our old ways and we have been doing the reverse...
