Udupi: Sabhapaty Leads Anti-UPCL Fight, Calls for District Bandh

Udupi, Feb 17: Former MLA and JDS leader, U R Sabhapaty, announced his intention to join hands with the Rajya Raita Sangha to fight apolitically for the closure of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd’s (UPCL) thermal power plant near Padubidri.  In this connection, he has given call for observing undivided Dakshina Kannada district level bandh on March 5.

He said that the bandh will be voluntary, and that he seeks support of the gram panchayats, farmers’ organizations, bus and rickshaw drivers and the labour organizations for making the bandh a success. He was speaking after visiting the area around the said plant on Wednesday February 16.

Sabhapaty expressed grave concern about the environmental hazards posed by the fly ash of the UPCL plant at a place located near the foot of the Western Ghats, considered to be one of the most eco-sensitive pockets in the entire world. He expressed the fear that the level of harm posed by the plant to the people, forests and animals, may spread up to 200 kms around the plant, once it starts operating at full capacity.

He accused the local MLA and MP of turning a blind eye towards the problems of the people and agriculturists. He said that the district deputy commissioner has been sending false reports about the plant’s functioning, by sitting at Udupi. He warned that the government and the deputy commissioner will be responsible for untoward incidents if any that may occur during the bandh period.

He also revealed his plans to conduct village visits by foot starting from Hejmady village on February 23, and ending on February 28.

When his attention was drawn to the fact that JDS supremo, Deve Gowda, was the Prime Minister when the project got the government’s nod, Sabhapaty claimed that the central government had not given clearance to any specific place for the setting up of the project. He said that S M Krishna government had issued clearances to the plant. He said he had always raised his voice against the erstwhile Cogentrix and Nagarajuna thermal power plants here in the past, and recollected that the then MLA, Vasant Salian, had branded him as Vatal Nagaraj of the region because of his tenacious fight.

Udupi district Raita Sangha president, Vijayakumar Hegde, said that Pejavar Swamiji Sri Vishweshateertha had volunteered to extend support for their fight against the thermal power plant. President of Udupi District Panchayats Presidents Union, Deviprasad Shetty, said that resolutions will be passed by individual  panchayats at the respective Gram Sabhas against the UPCL plant, and send the same to the government through the deputy commissioner.

Why such hazardous prjects have permitted in the coastal belts where the desity of population is so high? After all how these real leaders could hide so far and come out at once after completion of the project and the production started ? If they had supported to the previous protests before commencement of the project there would have some positive result.

Now it is too late to oppose the project. Company should take all precautions to despatch the coal as well as fly ash in closed pipes to some isolated places or to where the electricity is supplied. It should not be dumped anywhere in DK or Udupi districts.

Politics aside there is a very valid concern. There is lot of technology available to diminish the problem. Costs money but nothing compared to health benefits. The protest will be justified if solutions are put in place. Lastly why was this not an issue in the feasibilty study. Looks like the local people are not in the loop. Hope they dont have any power cut!

Hats up Mr. Dinesh Sheety for U R vegilent vision. Yes it the fact. The so called protester is the spy of UPLC that is why the green shawl wearing elderly person grabs the neck of the victim of UPLC. . People want fame, name & publicity. Why all protesters join together? Where is Mr. V. Hegde now?. By the photos we can see the disaster when plant is 25% operational and if it is 100% operational, God only knows what will be4 the disaster. The comments by Mr. Balakrishna Shetty are 100% true. We are forced to live in sweetly poisonous area by our corrupt politician by approving the coal fired power plant in the fully fertile land.

Where is SriJayaKrishna Parisara Hitharakshana Sangha which had established their new office to serve the people in Udupi, which had helped the above company to set up their plant which was essential to all & with non-polluting modern technology (according to them)- was implemented by the above power producing co.
Is this the modern available technology they were vehemently putting forth to dupe the people.

Please see carefully photo no.7 from top. You will see the true color of a leader. I can see the gentlemen with green showl holding neck/color of a common man and pushing him. Can you all see what I am seeing. One don't need a degree of ex or Current MLA, MP. We don't need ex MLA, Ex MLA has to wake up now because current MLA is sleeping. 30 year old regime in Egypt was thrown out by common general public. UPCL is a small unit, just stop all ways to the site. The unit will automatically close down. This is a big natural disaster. We are killing our own future generation for our petty benefit. This unit can be run in a better way without causing harm to nature.

Dr Kamath, in the US more than sixty thousand children are born annually with nurological defects as per Havard study mainly due to consumption of food contaminated with mercury by their mothers. The established sources are coal fired power plants . Since fish is affected by mercury 37 States have issued advisaries against fish consumption. BALE BODU - AROGYADA BALE BODU - KANDEDEDU BAIYYA MUTTA URCHUNA BALE BODUCHI. US is paying the cost now and is developing massive solar evergy of which our country and especially Karnataka is very rich but has not even commenced study. Canada and Sweden passed laws banning coal fired plants.

China is dismantling one after the other. If the industries can be located anywhere any which way then we do not need regulatory bodies to control them. Power plants and red category industries are to be at viable plains not at sensitive zones like ours from where dispersion is restricted due to Western Ghats. I agree there is technology available to use upto 800000 tons ash annually into profitable products but who would do that by investing into lesser profit venture? On the contrary the equipments for this project are picked from scrap yards in China and reconditioned thanks to the politicians in our State who not only approved it but addl 583crores. Dr. Kamath I am sure you are fully aware that the mother alone knows the labor pain. It is therefore necessary to support the affected people - may there be any number of them not perfect.

All leaders who calls for bundh to be arrested forthwith?

Problems are genuine, Bundh is not a solution.

During MRPL establishment several leaders called several protests and only those leaders made money and gained publicity. People were betrayed.

Political leaders are corrupt who are deceiving people instead of serving?

I hope the looks of these dumping where once colorful lush green lands existed will make the hearts of the corrupt politicians also bleed. Make no mistake that this is a normal ash like that from the choola. This ash contains cancer causing heavy metals including lethal mercury which quickly enters the food chain fish, fruits vegetable and water. Experts contend that 1/19th portion of a teaspoon mercury is enough to contaminate a lake of 1 acre size and make the fish also poisonous. Any consumption of contaminated food especially by women may result in the birth of children with mental disorder. It is time we the people make officials and our elected representatives to work for us or sack them with kicks on their butt. Show no mercy on anyone who plays with the nature and human health for individual benefits.

Hi Guys, this is a very guineune struggle by the local villagers and please do not de-mean it. Again I request every city dwellers who say this is a humbug please visit Santhoor and nearby village and be our guest and see the problems yuorselves. we from this village are not against the project outrightly.. we are concerned about the apathy of the company, govt and even media. This cannnot be compared ..here these guys are polluting the entire environment , our roads have totally destroyed, we have robbers snacthing poor villagers belongings. it is worthwhile the company can buy the remaining villages and we would be happy to move out from here. Once again I am warning everyone in twin districts that, this project and projects like this will harm not only our state but the entire country. These poilticians have not taken a proper risk analysis, western ghats is a veery delicate seaward mountain region which attracts the summer winds southwest monsoon in to the country. The natural damage for our region will be irreversible. Govt, can set up any non polluting industry or an alternative power generating unit instead of this highly polluting thermal project. We cannot destroy our beautiful land in one generation and live a desert for our children. It is like killing a goose. Hope some sense prevail.

No point opposing the project at this stage. Going by the pictures, it is evident that the company has thrown all rules to the wind. UPCL should me made to dispose the ash in a proper scientific way, so that no farmers or fishermen are put to hardships.
Enough of this Bandh culture. We need the Egypt model of protest.

We dont know what will be the result in the end of this drama...May be a political stage show to get some publicity....
But rightfully all leaders should unite along with the locals to protest this protest..because if UPCL cannot keep its promise to save environment and if they are this much careless in the management of waste ash they should close the powerplant. Instead of spoiling the environment and putting the poor peoples life in danger let them close the power plant and atleast local pepople will get some relief..
