Udupi woman suicide case: Congress attacks Bommai govt over deaths due to unemployment

Bengaluru, May 17 (IANS): The Congress has raked up the issue of deaths due to unemployment in Karnataka in the backdrop of a 23-year-old MBA graduate ending her life after failing to find a suitable job recently.

Sahana, the victim, had completed her MBA a year and half ago in Mangaluru. As she did not find a suitable job, she consumed poison on April 30 and succumbed in the hospital on May 9.

Congress President D.K. Shivakumar took up the issue on social media and stated that he is deeply saddened by the suicide of Sahana in Udupi. "She took the extreme step because she could not find a suitable job despite an MBA. This is not the first unemployment suicide in Karnataka. I have no desire to do politics over a tragic loss of life," he said.

Sahana

"My condolences to her family. I wish them all the strength in dealing with this tragedy. We as a society should introspect on where we are going wrong. If an MBA has to commit suicide due to unemployment, we are definitely doing something wrong," he explained.

"Why is this happening? Why are our youth having to face despair? Some of the world's most famous economists are Indians, including Nobel award winners. Can we not take their expertise in creating jobs?" Shivakumar said.

He further stated that India has 100 unicorns now. "Karnataka creates jobs for people from across India. So why are we seeing a high unemployment rate and even suicides? And why doesn't the media discuss this?"

However, as per the statistics available with the Central government, Karnataka though being a progressive state and contributes significantly to the Indian economy, accounts for the most number of deaths due to unemployment.

Union Labour and Employment Minister Bhupendra Yadav had presented statistics in this regard in the Lok Sabha. As per the data of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), Karnataka reported 553 unemployment related deaths in 2019, followed by Maharashtra (452) and Tamil Nadu (251).

Karnataka recorded 224 deaths in 2016, 375 in 2017 and 464 in 2018 due to unemployment. The issue is likely to be taken up by the opposition parties to target the ruling BJP in the state.

While feeling sorry for her suicide, I know, since there is mushrooming of professional diploma mills in India, it is difficult to get a job for MBAs now. Though, our Mangalorean MBA colleges are not comparable to IIMs, Bajaj of Mumbai, St. Xaviers of Ranch or St Joseph of Bangalore, still I feel they are not, so low in standards, like the diploma mills elsewhere in India. The problem is Mangalore does not have opening for MBAs. Sometimes, other than reputation of an institution, the luck, the person's ideas and connection of the institutes with industry groups also has an impact. The richest professional in India, Ignatius Navil Noronha with present net worth off Rs 7700 crores is not from IIM or a well known management institute.

Ignatius Navil Noronha, the chief executive officer of Avenue Supermarts Ltd which owns the DMart retail chain, has seen his net worth rise above a billion dollars since after an incredible 113% rise in company's stock this year. Noronha was born and brought up in Mumbai and graduated from the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (very old and reputed management institute) with a management degree.

Unemployment in BJP ruled states is an undeniable fact and growing strong. All youngsters are moving out of BJP ruled states to Non-BJP states for better life and jobs. To add salt to wounds no new MNCs are setting up businesses anymore in India and those existing one’s are thinking of winding down. It’s going to be hell here soon.

Rita, we the older generation very well know the success in life or betterment of living standard which came in a hard way. Present generation and their ego makes them so proud of their education and high expectations of securing job in 5 figures. in 1970 the starting salary in Nationalized banks was Rs. 250.- per month. Whatsoever, one should be lucky and hard working to achieve step by step success and not a meteoric raise at a time. I have enough experience in life of earning and contributing towards welfare of my siblings an helping hand to parents. and still carry on the good work not by compulsion but by wish and helping nature.

While feeling emphathetic for her; the problem also is with mushrooming of shady professional colleges and every TDH getting entry into profession colleges. Only those who are really good, with multiple skills, get jobs. Even in campus recruitment salaries are paid depending on the reputation of the college, there's a lot of difference in salaries of students who are from tier one to tier three colleges. Also maybe, being an MBA, she might have big expectations and not ready to take up a small job to begin with.

Really a shame for all of us. One community is afraid of helping other community; as the splinter groups immediately come and attack the charitable person under the guise of converting people. Worrying

Suicide is also not a answer to unemployment. One has to try even small jobs to do first ,Big chances are not falling from sky above .Had to be ready to move other places.Even it is depends upon sometimes how you write for your job.Take good supporter to write it.A bit of luck too is important. But on this politicians shouldnt make Polititcs.Politicians cant go to every and each of a unemployed youths to create a job.Sad she get a chance but please do not commit suicide because you didnt get a job.Think of alternatives .

Politics at the cost of some one's death. Political leaders wait for an opprotunity when & how to attack opposition party. No need to assume the cause. Police will solve the mystery.
